Is This A Virus...? Or just a bug in the System?

    Hey Gang,

I have a strange problem. I have Trend-Micro Boot-Up scanner on my motherboard, MSI KM3M-Combo-L. When it is on and I am using AVG 7.0 (paid) I sometimes get an error on boot up, from MSI that a virus has been detected. This occurs after bootup has cleared the BIOS and AVG Boot up scanner has just run. Warning comes from Trend Micro just after AVG scanner has run. It says OS is not compatible with current version of Trend Micro. I am using Win98se. I think this was a motherboard designed with XP in mind.

The AVG boot up scanner reports that everything is clear.

To test this I have installed other virus scanners. When I try AVG free edition I get the same error message from Trend Micro when whe AVG boot scaner is on. But I am not able to run the full boot scan, but rather I am able to scan the 1st two files of the boot sector.

When I try to run a boot scan with Norton 2001, (and AVG is uninstalled) it doesn't detect my dat signature files (which were just made) so bootscan cannot continue.

When I try to run a boot scan with McAfee 8.0 I (and AVG is uninstalled) I get an error saying that McAfee couldn't detect any files on my C drive.

If I turn AVG 7 boot up scanner off everything functions normally and I am able to boot properly.

Norton 2001 doesn't detect a virus on bootup. McAfee doesn't have a boot up scanner. AVG only reports it when it has cleared the TRend Micro bootup up scan and enters the AVG scan (but again, AVG reports that everyting is clear)

    What's going on?

    Thanks,

Sounds like some weird glitch with the bios av
I might try seeing if theri is some mention of this in newer bios's for that motherboard

If I read this right you have two AV products installed at once ?

If thats so you'll get no end of 'false positives' - most AV sees any other AV as 'malicious'

    Hi Confused,

Wouldn't turning Trend-Micro (the mobo AV app) off, leave the bios rom chip open to possible infection?
