    Freeserve!!

    Hi
An xp home machine, using Broadband, works fine with Netscape, Internet Exporer and Outlook in exisiting users; but when I create a new User, the modem connects fine, Netscape is fine but IE and Outlook both come up with the Freeserve Connection window (I used to use Freeserve) and try to dial up using the 56K modem. This Freeserve window is white and takes up the whole screen with no file-edit-view etc menus at the top. In IE properties I have removed the Freeserve connection leaving only the ADSL available. I have tried making the new user administrator but still the same thing happens. I have also uninstalled the freeserve connection kit. Apologies to non UK people who may not have heard of Freeserve! Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I'm working on Win2K right now so I'm flying blind with these commands so if they're not exact, look around a bit.

Somehow, your default user settings have been updated to use this connection. Best bet is to create a brand new user, configure the internet settings the way you want them to work. Log that user off and logon as a user with admin rights. Go to Start, Control Panel, System, Advanced Tab, and click the middle button which should be User Profiles.

Select the User ID that you created and configured. Click the COPY button at the bottom. Copy that user to C:\Documents and Settings\Default User.

Any new users created now will copy the updated default user profile.

The Freeserve software is bad for taking over your PC. Did it once to me and I got rid of it by searching the registry and deleting everything that said Freeserve. Also check there's nothing in Add/Remove programs referring to them. As always, backup first.

If you intend to use the connection to them again in the future, I wouldn't do the above.

    Good luck!

Freeserve has an ".ins" file, find it, open it in notepad, it tells you where it put everything, then you just have to delete the multitude of "favourites" it added for you.

OK -thanks for all your suggestions. In the end, I went to the freeserve folder and renamed the "sign" icon. That's what started up when I initially clicked on Internet Explorer. Now I can get in OK using the broadband connection. Many thanks everyone for your help.
