?!!? If the problem is that you can only get 16 colors or such, best to my knowledge, it has nothing to do with the monitor. Did you install the driver for your S3 card correctly? If the Device manager shows that all is fine, remove the display adapter and set it to default standard vga. Then reinstall the driver for your S3 card. Good luck!

thanks for the tip but, i tried that ...i think the problem is i don't have the specific driver for my video adaptor...i went to the s3 site...but the exact driver wasnt there...so i got the next closest one...and it only lets me use up to 16 colours.....do you know where else i couldgo to get s3 drivers??...p.s. you said it dosent matter about the monitor...but in my device manager..it says unknown monitor...does that matter???....thankx,

Unknown monitors should not be a problem, but of course there are always exceptions. Try www.glsetup.com for your video driver. You can get a program there that'll find your driver off the internet and download AND install it for you. HOPE this helps

keep your original win 95/98 CD or whatever your OS version is handy. go right click on empty desktop area and point to properties. click settings tab and click advanced. choose monitor tab and click change button/next/display all list, next/show all hardware/super vga 800x600/next. then you may be asked for the CD. reboot and it should be okay. all of this of course after you've installed the drivers for your display card properly, if not go to www.s3.com (you gotta know chipset of the vga card, in my case, mine is 365 under S3 Trio 3D).

Sorry, I've been occupied with other things so I couldn't get back to you sooner. I thought you were using the correct driver for your video card. You MUST (in this case) use the correct driver! Your current substitute driver is letting you know by displaying only 16 colors. Even if you install the driver for your monitor, you'll end up with 16 colors. Generally, the drivers for monitors just informs your video card what it can AND CAN NOT display. For example, if you had a graphics board capable of refresh rate of 300Hz (exaggeration), the driver for your monitor (which is only capable of 60Hz, let's say) will PREVENT the graphics board from attempting to refresh the monitor rate at 300Hz. This prevention will stop the monitor from becoming a nice bonfire! The suggestion above re: driver for monitor can also be used if you are a perfectionist. The standard "unknown monitor" setting (safety from Windows operating system) is quite all right. I have never heard of damage caused by leaving it as "unknown monitor". You just don't have the little tweaks that you would have compared to, installing the specific driver for your monitor. Again, use the correct driver for your video card. Good luck.

By the way, what is the model of the video card? If you are unable to locate the driver, maybe someone else knows where it is.
