celeron 500 256MB PC133 - XP Pro OK?
what do y'all think. there are just going to be workstations in peer to peer. I was planning to just go 2k pro, but I've already got a custom unattended XP PRO CD that installs then loads norton AV, DX9, WMP9, and security rollup 2, which really cuts down on the amount of post windows updating and rebooting, plus did I mention it's unattended?
I've got 3 different makes/models. so it's a total of 3 installs then ghosting. the unattended bit wouldn't make it any faster, but it would free me up from having to baby sit it, and download a ton of windows updates afterwards.
I'm just a wee bit concerned about the celeron 500 part. what do you think. . . . .. .
I'd make a 2k unattended cd, but I'm just feeling too lazy lately.

These people gonna get paid to work, or to watch paint dry? Win2K has WAY less OS overhead than XP. XP Professional is a good OS, and it is what I use, but I would be really frustrated trying to run it on such a slow platform.
Productivity will be much improved using Win2K on that platform, imho.

Sorry but I disagree. I would go with XP. I can only use my personal observations but I have seen a number of computers that had Win2K but now have xp. As long as you have the 256mb ram on the computers I have found that WinXp boots way faster. It is also easier to support the hardware with xp. On a personal note I have a Dell Laptop with a P3 1000mhz and 384 mb ram. It came with XP but i put win2k on it. I decided to change back to xp due to the slowness of 2k. As long as you have the ram XP seems to run faster than 2k.

I'll second techs advice. Add more RAM if you can (256mb minimum, 512mb would be better) and it will more than make up for the Celeron's puny cache. XP doesn't need any more horsepower than 2K does, especially if you turn off the eye candy and put it into classic display mode.

My answer depends on your thoughts on the computer.
If the computer is going to be used for office application and Internet - I guess it is OK...
Also for better performance - adjust the computer for best performance by removing all the Visual effects and the Native XP skin. Also make the Page file as a custom size of 256-512Mb (way more than enough)
It should give you 10-15% improvement...
Hope I helped you,
Gabriel
