Update Installation Order
I'm having an issue with my PC. It involves DVD playback and Adobe Reader 6 locking up the system. Anyway, I'm going to rebuild the system from scratch with a new video card. After I install a fresh copy of Windows xp Pro with SP1 what order I should install the following in:
DirectX 9.0b
Windows Media 9
Windows Media 9 Encoder
nVidia nForce Motherboard drivers
nVidia Detonator Video Drivers
Windows Critical updates from the Internet
My goal is to weed out serveral quirky issues that seem to be popping up on the system and I'm at a loss to find the reason. I'm hoping that by installing updates in a certian order will help.

mobo drivers
video drivers
Direct X
critical updates (may have to install them 1 at a time -GASP - to really isolate the problem)
WMP9 and encoder
. . . . that's the order I'd probably go. since most critical updates are security related and not performance related I'd do those near the bottom because if the issues aren't straightened out with drivers and directX you can reload without downloading another 20+ megs of critical updates.

I'd try loading the DirectX drivers before the video drivers.

This makes 2 for DirectX before Video Drivers since most current video drivers will require you to have DX9 installed prior to driver installation anyway. As far as the Media Player 9 and Encoder are concerned, you'll find that after installing MP9 the Encoder option will disappear from Windows Update's list. I'm not sure, but I think the Encoder gets installed with Media Player 9.
Edit: Of course, now that I think of it, I could be thinking about the Media Player Codec pack and not the encoder.
