Question about search feature in XP...

I have a user that wants to disable Windows XP's ability to search through zip files as it performs a search against a location. I've checked Microsoft's knowledge base but was unable to find an answer to this so i ask you all ... is this something that is built into XP or is there some way to disable XP's ability to search through archived zip files for faster searches?

Any response to this issue is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    ~S

I'd like that too! I have had some issue with that in server 2003, so I search the share from a 2k box as a workaround...

Windows XP Search can get slow if you have a lot of compressed files on your hard drive. Speed up your searches by disabling this. Open the Run command and type the following:

    regsvr32 c:\winnt\\system32\zipfldr.dll /u or

regsvr32 c:\windows\\system32\zipfldr.dll /u if installed in the windows directory To turn this feature back on:

    regsvr32 c:\winnt\\system32\zipfldr.dll or

regsvr32 c:\windows\\system32\zipfldr.dll if installed in the windows directory

Yup, turn off zip files, then you will have to download winzip or other zip utility. Shame you can't ask the search to just ignore zips....

Wonder where ms's suggestion box is?

Do you feel stupid yet, or would you care to have me explain the situation so that you do LaSERCHiPs...

NooNoo, you intrigued me, so I started looking at how to turn off zips as you suggeested. I ended up in folder options, file types for .zip. Don't quite know why I started there, but as it turns out it might be a good move. Anyway, it has a find action. I wonder about just removing that action, it should do the trick, then no requirement for WinZip...right?

I never noticed this in XP, but then all my XP machines have WinZip installed, so I presume it has changed these file associations during the program install. Because these are servers that I see the issue on, I am not testing it out for someone else, since I don't have a problem with it right now. Something to put on the back burner...but if someone else wants to try…

    I like it.

I use winrar anyway and this windows/zip integration has always run like a POS.
