ATI 9200 256Mb Vs Gainward TI 4800 SE 128Mb

Simple question, just to get your comments...

Which one would you go for, what would the cons and pros be?

Again, the cards are a Power Color ATI Radeon 9200 with 256MB and a Gainward Golden Sample TI 4800 SE with 128MB.

Depends on what motherboard it's going into and what is the major overriding factor for buying.

It's going into a Gigabyte mobo, supporting AGP 8X (both cards are 8X) and it is to be used mostly for video editing (premiere), 3d and graphics apps as well as gaming.

Don't waste your time or money! Get an ATI 9800 Pro, well worth it. Will last you much longer than those outdated cards.

I have an outdated ATI 7500 - does everything I need. Oh wait, it won't play games at [insert fps figure that beats your friends here] speed.

Caamsa9 - you buy what is needed to do the job accurately and without waste. If the sole purpose of buying a video card is for a pissing contest, then yes buy the latest. Otherwise, buy what you need.

Of those two, the 4800SE is faster for gaming. The 9200 is an AGP8x version of the 9000 which is a hobbled 8500. The 8500 goes neck and neck with the 4200 that the 4800SE is based on. Also, when there is lots of ram on a lowend card like the 9200, it is low end ram. Typically slower than the ram on the 128 MB versions. I would recommend the 4800SE.

As an alternative, look into the 9600 non pros. They are likely in your price range and offer DX9 support. Fast to boot.
