    PC Pro users in here!

I've got some intermittant blue screen problems with other quirky things going on. This is a Sony PCG-992L Laptop. It fails almost every memory test (256MB pc100 memory). I installed a 256MB pc133 stick (brand new) and she has failed all but 2 tests with the new stick. Is anyone aware of a compatibility problem? I don't wanna "guess" that their mainboard is failed.

The first stick is the original memory.

I believe what she is asking, are you sure that the new stick is compatible? Is it high density or low, is it ecc or non, does the lappy require something special?

Not all sdram is created equal....

No doubt that is correct. However....the same tests fail on both sticks....I have a tech support email in and they said they would refer it to the engineers. Get where i'm coming from now? If you would've been here you would see what i'm talking about.

Do you take out the original stick of memory and only leave in the new one when you run the test?

Affirmative....I came up with the same thing at crucial.com....but the ID sticker on the underside of the laptop doesn't lie. It's one of the Celeron 1Ghz laptops. When I have a memory diagnostic fail I always rerun on desktops with only 1 stick of memory installed...with laptops I always run with 1 stick at a time...I suspected that the old stick was bad so I removed it and installed the new one....same crap different day lol. I'm asking about a compatibility issue....hopefully they'll answer in a reasonable amount of time....but I doubt it.

I did a search and found a site that sells pc100 memory but not any site that claimed you can ONLY use pc100. It said something about using only original memory....but i've never heard of that site and they tried to give the feeling that you needed to order the memory that THEY had. It just sounded like someone trying to make a sale. I dug up my old memtest (finally found it) and both the pc100 and pc133 sticks test good.....so it appears to be a compatibility problem.

    Thanx for your help

    laptop memory

My experiance is it has to stay what it was. If it was 100mhz then the new stick will have to be 100mhz.

I had no problems with the pc133 memory. It failed the test just like the PC100. Memtest passed both sticks however.

Do you have the memory settings in the BIOS set manualy for the old stick?

Set it by SPD and see if that fixes it. Conversely select the manual settings as well, but check other memory settings that may be pushing the RAM beyond it's specs. Just a guess.

BTW.....it failed with the old stick and the new...same tests...not a memory setting.
