Continuous Beeping
Hi all...iam working on a hp computer that had ME on it but the customer wanted 98. So i installed 98 and everything was fine for about 3 months. Now when you boot up the machine there is a constant beeping. beep beep beep for about 2 or 3 minutes then the machine goes into safe mode. If you hit Esc when the beeping starts the machine boots up fine like nothing is wrong. I removed all the cards and reseated them and still no good. I swapped out the video card and still no good. I swapped out the ram and that didnt do the trick. Any ideas what to do...iam at a loss
Thx Born

Have you tried the power supply? Does it only do this on battery or when plugged in?

HP's usually show a HP splash screen when you boot up rather than the POST screen. If you haven't already, go into the BIOS setup and find the option to show the POST screen on bootup. I can't tell you exactly what it's called but on a HP it might be "Show Diagnostic Startup Screen" or something like that.
With a bit of luck that might let you see an error message being displayed and give you more idea of what the beeping is all about.
cheers

My bios allows me to turn the beep on or off. I also allows me to choose which kind of incident gets the beep.
For example, case-open gets a beep, cpu overheat gets a beep. You might want to consult the mobo manual to find out what three deep beeps mean...
