Dun Broke it, failed pcmcia wireless card install.

    Hi All,

I dun broke an install. I didn't rtfm when i should have. I bunged the card (d-link dwl-g650) into my work laptiop (C600) and let win2k sp4 detect the card and install the drivers from CD. I should have done it the other way round. Install the software, reboot and put the card in. I know i'm a pratt.

Now i have a unresponsive card in win2k, i installed it on a winME laptop (properly) and it works fine. The beauty of hindsight :-)))

I uninstalled, deleted keys from the registry. Unistalled my VPN client because it put some services on the card. But there are 2 enum keys in the reg i can't delete in normal or safe mode. When these are gone i may be able to start from scratch. Device manager is clear, no hidden devices, i cleared them.

    Any suggestions?

I screw up installs of the D-Link PCI cards under WinME the same way all to often. Maybe my fix may give you some ideas.

If you let WinME automatically install the drivers from the D-Link PCI card driver disk, it will install the WinXP drivers -- which don't work. To fix it, I force WinME to install the WinME drivers from disk (select "View drivers from a list"), then uninstall and reinstall TCP/IP. I wonder if running winsockxpfix ( http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html ) might be needed for win2k

It turns out the card is faulty. I put a generic 11mb card in and it was up and running in minutes. I feel an RMA coming on..

    Thanks
