Thin client imaging software
Hello people, whats going?
i am having a huge problem here at work and i would like to find a work around, see if any of you guys can help me with this.
in the hospital we have around 300 thinclient workstations, they are NETXRPESS SL2000, we have a server with Wyse Rapport 3.0 in order to image the netiers (netxpress sl2000 ). but, for the last year we haven't had any problems with them, now that they are showing imaging problems, all we have to do is re-image them and they are ready to go. the problem i am having is that when we try to open the program ( rapport 3.0 ) is telling us that the license has expired ( wish shouldnt ) and cant do crap with it. i called the program vendo ( wyse ) and they have upgraded from 3.0 to 4.0, which means they dont support 3.0 anymore or moreless give us a license number for us to have a working server. version 4.0 is not compatible with the version of netier we have, so right now i cam screwed, i have no server to re-image this thinclients and i am running out of sh!t box pcs to replace them with. i have tried norton ghost and several similar programs and cant image it.
have any of you work with this type of thinclient? used any imaging program that will work besides wyse rapport 3.0? i would like to hear of any other possibilities that you might have.. i am willing to pay for a license if you have one for sale.. please let me know.
thanks

why cant you use ghost? Have you tried the Corperate version of ghost? its diffrent than from the home version. Alot more stuff in it. I think there at 8.0 now. The onyl problem I have with ghost 7.0 and below is if the computer name is longer than 7 charecters then it wont ghost it, cause this is a dos issue. (note: 123456~1 - problem) anyways, ghost 8.0 has win32 support, so you can make a winpe (bartpe), windows live cd with ghost, and ghost the machine from a live windows xp cd. Thing thats cool is all those nic cards that are not supported in dos but are in windows xp can now work with ghost

the netier has a built in chip with a 26 mb winnt 4.0 image. the netier has connection for a floppy drive and a hard drive, usb and serial.
this are the steps we are taking for ghosting.
boot a good working netier to the floppy with network connection.
ghost "image to image" and save it on the network.
boot the bad image netier with the same floppy to gain network connection.
ghost "image to disk",
it starts imaging then we get error message that the image is too large for disk.
thats the last thing we get..
by the way, Altiris, what part of altiris do you use and will it work with dos?

I believe we are using the server management suite...as far as dos goes I don't believe so....we push (image) our client boxes from a central server that holds multiple images for different os's, pc configurations....etc.

You say you use an existing 'working' netier as the source, creating an image with which you ghost a new (needing config'd) netier.
Are you able to image from an older image file? (dated before this problem arose?)
How much 'disk space' is available on the Netier? Would cleaning up 'drive space' on the netier chip create a smaller image file?

not sure exactly how much space is in the chip, but i dont think is too large.
we also tried booting the bad image netier with boot disk and fdisk/format the chip then ghosint from image to disk, we get the same error message.
also tried what DAEMON suggested, pc named changed it from "netxpress1234" to "1234" and would not work, same error message about image too large for disk.
the netier that has a good working image, our source, has been cleaned up and tweaked out, removed temp files that are stored for programs to work and other files that are not needed. there is no "drive space" in the winnt shell the netier has, the only program the netier has besides winnt is citrix, thats how they use all the programs they need in different dept. in the hospital, they are used pretty much for nurse stations.
the only thing i havent tried is ghosting "disk to disk", the netier's motherboard had connection for ide cable, but it looks like its an ide for laptop hard drive, which we dont have here, not sure if i want to spend the money on a laptap drive and interface cable and crap wont work...
any other ideas??
