Help with DirectX 8, 3D Prophet II Pro, and ABit KT7A-RAID
Here's the problem...DirectX 8 seems to give me problems with my Hercules 3D Prophet II Pro Graphics Card. Direct3D simply cannot work using hardware acceleration and AGP Texturing doesn't seem to work, hence, I can't get games that work with Direct3D to work! I used the DxDiag utility and here are the graphic card results:
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS/GeForce2 Pro
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type:
DAC type:
Device ID: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0150&SUBSYS_700714AF&REV_A4\ 000800

Monitor: NEC MultiSync 5FGe
Monitor Max Res: 1280,1024
Driver Name: nvdisp.drv
Driver Version: 4.13.01.1241 (English)
DDI Version: 8 (or higher)

Driver Date/Size: 5/17/2001 11:23:42, 105888 bytes

Mini VDD: nvmini.vxd
Mini VDD Date: , 0 bytes
Device Identifier: {D7B71E3E-4210-11CF-C673-065006C2C935}
Vendor ID: 0x10DE
Device ID: 0x0150
SubSys ID: 0x700714AF
Revision ID: 0x00A4
Registry: OK
DDraw Status: Enabled
D3D Status: Enabled
AGP Status: Enabled
DDraw Test Result: All tests were successful.
D3D Test Result: Failure at step 18 (CreateDevice): HRESULT = 0x887602eb (unknown error)
AGP Test Result: Failure at step 18 (CreateDevice): HRESULT = 0x887602eb (unknown error)
Sorry for all that garbage...anyway WTF?! Why does it think I have only 1.5 MB of display mem? I have 64 MB on the board. Also the drivers I am using currently are nVIDIA's reference drivers, not the Hercules drivers, and the reference drivers ARE WHQL certified, even though DxDiag doesn't think so.
The problem my card has with my mobo is that it is not recognized when I start booting. The problem seems to be solved when my computer beeps telling me I have no graphics card and I reset it. Also, I have installed the VIA 4in1 drivers and have installed the AGP VxD in turbo mode (the latest drivers, not the BETA).
Mainly, it's DirectX that's really pissing me off!
Also, OpenGL works fine. I use that instead of Direct3D in games that allow me to choose, But some games won't work otherwise (e.g. Madden 2001) because of it's dependence on Direct3D.
Somebody please help me! I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

Sounds like the driver not supporting DirectX 8. [Let's see thinking to myself] I don't think reinstalling DX8 is a solution. Maybe reinstalling the vc card and drivers may help. I thought I read where the next generation Detonator drivers were out (14.61?). That may be a solution. I know I had to reinstall my Radeon Drivers last week, don't quite know what the problem was but it was corrected. Is he running ME or 98SE? For some reason I've had a rash of reinstalls for video drivers on clients ME machines. Most of them have been the nVidia driver.
[OK have stopped thinking to myself] I would try reinstalling the video card and reinstall the new drivers. I would treat it just like a new install. Go to control panel and delete the hardware from the system and just to make sure go to Add/Remove Software and remove anything that may be still there. Make sure you have your drivers handy and reboot. Also just for happy giggles in the BIOS make sure your graphics card setting is AGP.
I only post using 100% recycled electrons!!!
Stay on the bomb run, boys. I'm going to get them doors open if it hair lips everybody on Bear Creek.

Got it to work! BAM! Yeah, clearing out all the drivers and registry entries helps...it helps a lot. Did that and re-installed everything...but I think I found out the real culprit.
In the section where you can edit Direct3D settings for my card, there's a part where you can allocate an X amount of system memory for Direct3D...whoops, I had it too high. I put it up 150 MB and that's when DxDiag gave me the errors I listed above. It worked after I put it down to 63 MB.
Geez, I have 512 MB SDRAM in my system, what gives?
Wow...DirectX sure is wacky.
Thanks for the help!
