Ntoskrnl problem.XP won't boot.
My IBM Thinkpad T40 will not boot to Windows XP Pro. I just get a black screen with the message....
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.
How do i go about reinstalling this file, or does this mean i have to re-install windows XP? Thanks for any help.

Do you have a restore disk only - one that insists you format or do you have a windows xp cd that is usable?
here is the fix

good, so if that doesn't work, you could use chkdsk with /r or /f at repair console.

Sorry NooNoo, ithought it was a full install disk. Any way to a fix using an upgrade XP disk? Question. When using a Win ME boot disk i only get the virtual drive C:, and the cd drive D:. Is that because the boot disk can not read the ntfs file system? if that is so that should mean that i can not copy a new ntoskrnl.exe to a drive that is not available yes?

Yes, do it the same way but you must boot from the CD, not an ME boot disk. You have NTFS (score one for you -ed ) so ME can't "see" it. You'll need to go into Bios Setup and change the boot option to CD first.

ok i was able to boot into the recovery console, but none of the suggestions worked. I'm still get the missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe message. Is there anything more i can try? There is some mission critical info on this box.

Have you done EVERYthing listed from NooNoo's fix article.?This should have fixed it. Have you tried a repair install yet? If so, does it not find the old XP installation?
