I thought we covered this pretty thoroughly here: http://forums.windrivers.com/showthread.php?t=58463. Did you search the site recommended (http://modemsite.com/56k/index.asp)? I bring your attention to this:
If you're searching for a quick-fix init string for your modem here it is: [Notice it is blank.]
    Blank. Nothing. No init string.

At least - that's the place to start. When your modem is properly installed, the .inf file supplied with the driver gives your modem the proper init strings based upon your Connectoid settings.

There are situations where you can add an init string that will improve your connectivity - but there's no 'magic init string'. Analyze your problem - unable to connect, disconnects, low speeds, poor line - and try speed limit or protocol initialization strings.

Not offended at all - I just wanted to make the point that changes to the setup strings are unlikely to improve your connection speed. Given your phone lines, you're probably connecting as fast as you're going to. Believe me, I know how you feel - before I got dsl 2 years ago, I was connecting at 24k and 26.4k.

Hey jackpot, if you found an answer perhaps you could let us know as well so we can help better the next time. Yes there are tweaks for modem connections, and they DO work. They are registry tweaks, not modem stings however. I remember way back in the day when I had to use dial up as well.

well what i learned didnt really help. it was a tip but it just didnt work good on my modem. i just cant get this lt win modem to connect like the other pc i have its kinda got me to thinking its the modem in this pc.. i have done alot of playing around with it and it will not connect over 26400 the other one hits 28800 every time same phone line same modem same driver same sittings. someone told me in another post that a modem will remember its last connection and try to connect at the same as before so i have tryed resetting it but no luck it comes right back like i said a few days ago........ 26400- 28800 dont sound great but if you only could see the different it is on this other one its like night and day i guess my only shot is to bust out 99.00 bucks a month for a satt system because no cable here. and not close enough for wireless and old a55 phone lines it urks me.... though my buddy right down the road 1/2 mile gets 52000 connection but his lines run right stright in to the office its like 1/4 mile from him so he has a clean line.... mine runs about 3 miles with about 4 line bridges in it and thats what a sprint phone guy said was my problem and he said it would be all new lines run in the next 5 years yepieeeee i doubt i will have a pc or hair in my head by that time ...lol

this is what i was giving from another forum if any wants to give it a shot here what you do it want hurt it just didnt make any different much on mine You can try the following:

Go to Phone and Modem Options in the control panel
Click on the Modem tab. Click on Properties. Click on the Advanced Tab

In the Extra Settings box type in ATS38=0-V90=0
Click on Advanced Port Settings and put the Receive Buffer on the second notch from the left and transmit buffer on third notch from the left. Click OK

Click on Change Default Preferences. Set port speed to 57600. Set Compression to Disabled and set Flow Control to xON/xOFF

    Click OK, OK, OK

Back in the Control Panel go to Network Connection
Right click on your dialer and go to Properties
Click on Networking Tab and then click on Settings and make sure that only Enable Software Compression is checked. Click OK
For "This connection uses the following items section" make sure that only Internet Protocol, QoS Packet Sched. and Client for Microsoft Networks is checked. Click OK

Reboot and see if that helps

I know what you mean , where I just moved from was no Cable or anything , any ISP No. was long distance ,I could only connect at V.34 from 18.* to 26.6 , 3 PC's never connected they same speed , had tried all the tricks and new soft modems to extrenal one ,
only thing that helped was talking to the Phone Co and get them to test or adjust the 'Gain' (I think it was) and that alot until they decided I was abusing my Long Distance Calling Package and bumped me to another carrier and connections got worse .
Anyway 2 ident. PC can be different , if you ran BenchMark test on them more than likely they will atleast have slightly different scores .
Best thing I was told was try to get together with others thru that area and beyond and get the phone Co to do something quicker or go SAT .
