Question Win 98SE keeps installing Two Monitors

This may even be normal...dont know.

    Win98SE keeps installing TWO monitors.
One is called Plug n Play Monitor
The other is called "default" Monitor

I keep removing them but it finds Two again.

Im wondering if its causing GL instability.

I have a WinFast GeForce2 MX. (which has two monitor options...but not my card).

    Thanks.

    it's normal.

the "default" monitor is a feature of the driver that designed to support a TV output (even if your card doesn't have one)

    ignore it !

Im glad to see this topic come up, because I am fighting an issue stemming from the same exact problem, only the card is a PNY GeForce2 MX its detecting two monitors as well, only this comp will not play a game that the customer purchased (croc 2) but the game plays just fine on every other machine in our shop , from geforce 256 cards to geforce 2 cards, but in this one (the one detecting two monitors) it will not play the game, just get a black screen. Ive RMAed the card once, so if this is "supposed" to be seeing two monitors, why then wont it play a game every other machine will, ive already reloaded the machine, I have to assume that it has somthing to do with the darn two monitor thing, its hard to believe this is "normal" I have a Geforce 2 MX in my home computer and it doesnt see "two" moniters and it has the latest drivers. I also have a GeForce 2 MX in the office same thing, no two monitors either.

    Question

    Backspace,

Does that card advertise an "optional TV out", mine does.
Do the "working" machines advertise this option?

My Gl concern is hesitations and random freezes on Quake II LAN and Net games. These are system studders, where the screen freezes, and the sound studders for a few seconds, then the game resumes.
    Its not a "connection" freeze.

I have to be carefull before blaming the Two monitor thing, cause Im not exactly comfortable with some other things about my system yet.

I have the imfamous Irongate chipset, which had AGP X2 issues.

For those kinds of things I would be looking at the ram very carefully, getting it tested together and separately and possible irq sharing issues.

I couldnt find anything like that.

Are you talking about legitimate sharing...If so, what would I look for, and how would I change that?

Yes this card has TV OUT but ive had many other cards in the past with TV OUT and 98 didnt see two monitors while one wasnt being used. An update to my problem, this same card (which I have three identical ones now) under WinXP Pro plays the game just fine and doesnt show two monitors in the device manager, but put it in 98se and bam two monitors and wont play the game. So my solution (although I think it sucks) was to take a Geforce 256 (first generation) with tv out card and put it in the customers machine and whammo plays the game just fine and 98 doesnt see two stinkin monitors.

I can't say I've ever seen this with cards that support multiple monitors. You might see the properties of the display indicate that there is more than one monitor, but you shouldn't find it in properties of my computer(so windows shouldn't keep finding it).

I think NooNoo has a point about Irq sharing, so since this is 98se, it looks like plug & pray has gone south, try turning off/on acpi support in Bios and see what that does...

I toggled back to enable...and still no drivers.

Do I have to reinstall everything (hardware drivers) now? Its like I just booted for the first time, and I cant get back to square one.

Restart in safe mode, go into device manager, delete the lot! Restart, hopefully windows will find everything ok. I hope.... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

    G'Day,

Done this a lot and it works but make sure you have copies of all your drivers and it helps if you copy WIN98SE files to your HDD (Windows\Options]Cabs).

Once you have done all that go into your Registry make a copy so if things go wrong you can recover, than go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ENUM and delete everything in ENUM.

When done reboot the system and she will look for a new set of drivers and install.

Works for me everytime I install a clients HDD into a new box where he dosen't want to lose his DATA.

As for the two monitors being shown I am still working on this.

    Regards

    Paul
