I am almost positive that Directx 3.0 was the highest NT could go. I believe it shipped with 2.0.

There was a hacked version later than 3.0 that would run on NT but I can't remember what version exactly.

I found a Quake site with a link to a hack version of directx:
    http://www.solcon.nl/mwijers/news.htm

That link had a link to a hacked directx 9.0. I downloaded all the files but I dont know what to do with them. Can somebody check out this link and tell me what I have to do with these files to make them work?

the files were called Direct3D9.zip, DirectDraw.zip, DirectInput9.zip, DirectPlay9.zip, and DirectShow9.zip. I looked in them and none of them have readme files. where should I Unzip these?

The link you posted is dead. Even if it wasn't, the hack is 7 years old and apparently doesn't work. See here: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e....se%26rnum%3D2

The short answer is that if you need to run a program requiring a current version of directx, you need to upgrade your os.

Well no - not really. You've got to look at it in context. NT is now a very old OS. When launched in '94 or thereabouts, it was intended as a stable platform for workstations - office machines. This meant that fast graphics were not a priority.

Win 95, launched a bit later, was the OS intended for domestic use.

By and large, though some might take issue with me here, NT has, over the years, performed its designed purppose adequately, many of our (corporate) customers still use it quite happily.

If you want to run programs that require a higher version of DirectX, you really need to upgrade your OS to at least Win98SE....Assuming the computer will handle it.

DiectX 3.0 is part of Service Pack 3 for NT4.0. Prior to installing SP3, NT had no DirectX support, SP3 was a major upgrade to NT. And MS felt that DX3 was all NT4 needed, and did not make any official upgrades to directX support for it past ver 3.0 (I remember waiting for sp3 to come out so that i could play Mechwarrior2 and other games of the time on NT :-P )
