How do you fix this? Win 98/IE

I am trying to upgrade from IE4 to IE5. My first attempt failed. So, I rebooted, and now when I try to run IE5setup, I get this message:

A previous installation was never completed. You must restart your computer to complete that installation before running internet explorer setup. Setup will now close.

So when I reboot, nothing happens. The setup does not continue, it boots up normally.

There is no IE repair tool, nor can i uninstall IE4 and start over.

Browse to this site and download IERADICATOR which will allow a complete uninstall of IE.

I've had the same problem before and there were two ways I fixed it. Hope they help:
(1) Go into explorer, (NOT IE), and delete the windows update setup files folder. This almost always get created during an install or upgrade of IE. This hsould then allow IE to do its install without believing there was a previous attempt
(2) Do a reinstall of the OS. This is a last resort only if the above suggestion doesn't work.

Before bringing out the old FORMAT C: command try upgrading even further to IE 6.0.

Another solution would be to upgrade from Win98 to Win98SE. The second edition already has a copy of IE 5.0 on it so you don't have to worry about IE issues.

IF you can't find Win98Se. I would try Ebay.com or Half.com. The difference between the two is that Half.com has fixed prices and Ebay is an auction.

A new or close to new copy of Win98Se is about $35.00

that sound like your supporting illicid soft ware to me, becasue you cant get a copy of 98 without a) buying a sytem, b)buying a MB, or c) buying a HDD.

how ever to fix your problem, go to add/remove, IE 5 should be listed, reomve it.

if not goto the windows update DIr (dont deletethis untillits working or ou will have to redownlaod all the stuff). A unwise, or unistall.exe should be avalible. (unless you selected not to back up the orginal files when you installed)

if not, run set up, a recovery option should be avalible, or uninstall (see above note regarding back up files)

if all this fails, goto a newer version of IE (yopu cant goback becasue it will come up with a newer version error (unless you go all the way to IE 3). you said IE 5 so you can upgrade to 5.1, 5.5 5.5 sp1, 5.5 sp2, 6.0. this will involve a total redownload.

This is ridiculous; I cannot believe the number of wrong and absurd responses in this thread. All the above is complete and utter nonsense. If any of the above repsondees would have searched the MSKB or even Google (which took me all of 10 seconds), they would have found the correct answer.

The correct answer is: delete the wininit.ini file from the Windows directory. Then you can install Internet Explorer.

I cannot understand how something so simple could warrant reinstalling Windows, upgrading the operating system, formatting your hard drive, or even accusing the poor man of pirating software!

Sorry if I am coming across too harsh, but please do a little research before answering. Get the <a href="http://toolbar.google.com" target="_blank">Google Toolbar</a>, it will quickly become your best friend.

I don't claim to be the world's greatest technician or anything, nor do I have any real ego par se. I just have a tendancy to admit when I'm out of my depth, and lately, I've been doing a lot of work cleaning up the mess left by a 'consultant' working in my area (read over-priced GoldenEye kid).
