I guess my main beef is that Microsoft just doesn't seem to be happy until your computer runs like a 386.

I pulled this mobile rack out a couple of weeks ago, put in a blank and loaded Win98SE on it. Incredible speed doing what 98 does.

I wish they weren't so "feature oriented", but then my old relatives wouldn't be able to see pictures of the grandkids, I guess.

Yeah, and 98 is a broken OS right out of the box that doesn't know how to properly address more than 128MB of memory.

2K & XP run like a champ if you tweak them properly. 2-3 months uptime isn't uncommon on my main home desktop system, and when I do shutdown or reboot, it's usually due to circumstances beyond my control. And everything zips along for me. :shrugs:

Yeah, mine zips too, but I run 1.5GB of RAM too. XP Professional is a good OS, IMO, but you better have some real hardware to run it properly. Kind of like when a boat gets up "on step".

Are you saying an OS should be smart enough to automaticaly adjust itself to be optimized for the billions of possible hardware configurations it could run on right ouf the box?

If so, I think we're still a few years away from that...

Its not the responsibility of M$ to anticipate what drivers will do with new hardware, its the responsibility of the hardware manufacturers to write drivers that will run on the worlds leading OS. If you cant write a driver for an OS that is in 90% of all PC's then there is something wrong. Even without source code from M$ there can be better drivers then some of what i have seen out there.
