Outlook Express Works Fine, but...
Hey Fellow Gurus:
I'm running Win98, IE 5.0 and Outlook Express 5...233MHZ Pentium with 64MB RAM. Everything works fine...
When I check e-mail each time, it seems that there is a file that keeps repeating itself. When I do the ol' Cntl-Alt-Del routine, there are several instances of the same file: MSIMN. If I check e-mail 5 times, there are 5 listings of the same program.
When I click on End Task, it says that program is not responding...so I have to click on End Task again. I have to do this for each instance that MSIMN appears.
Again, everything seems to be working fine...just curious as to what this file does and if there is anything I can do about it.
Thanks in advance for your timely response.

Msimn is the program launcher for Outlook Express. I've heard of some issues with Outlook acting like this when you start it from the task bar. Does it respond properly if you use the mail icon within IE?
For some odd reason all Microsoft sites are giving me 404 errors and I'm unable to provide you links in regards to this issue. Sorry!

Hi GirlGeek,
Hey, I think you've got something there! If I'm in IE and then click on Read Mail, everything is fine. But, if I open it from the Desktop Icon, then I get multiple listings of that program. (I don't have it on my taskbar.)
Anyway, thanks for the prompt response...will continue monitoring...

I had this exact same problem at work. I was able to determine that the McAfee Virus scanner was causing the problem. I forget exaclty which version of the scan engine it was that was causing the problem, but they do recognize that it does cause a problem with OE and have released a patch for this. The problem is that McAfee is not allowing OE to completely close, leaving it in memory. The more you open OE, the more entries you have for it in the task manager untill you end them or reboot/logoff.

Perhaps updating to IE 5.5 and the latest OE will help? I had the same problem with IE 5.0 and turned off the email virus scan to solve it.

I had several similar probs with OE 5.0 and the upgrade to OE 5.5 cured them all.

I've tried looking for the Download site at microsoft.com to upgrade from OE 5 to 5.5 but no luck. I have Office97 and all I could find was to upgrade Office2000, Outlook2000, etc. but nothing for Outlook Express.
Also, I have disabled my McAfee ViruScan but still get multiple listings of MSIMN program when opening up from the Desktop icon. When checking Mail from Internet Explorer, no problems.
Again, everything seems to be working fine. I'd hate to go through all the hassle of updating to IE 5.5 if I don't have to...plus, it may not solve my problems anyway.
Thanks again for all of the responses...will continue to monitor.

The OE upgrade to 5.5 is in the IE5.5 installation. You should upgrade both at once.

Maybe it's just me but IE 5.5 is buggy as heck and if you can avoid it do so. Just go to the windows update site (start/update windows) and click on update programs. This should bring up a chance to update OE.
Good luck!

This issue can occur if u are running the McAfee VirusScan program and it is configured to scan email and web pages.
If disabling McAfee doesn't work try start, run msconfig, select selective startup, uncheck load startup group, reboot and test.
HOPE THIS HELPS.

OE can only be updated individually by downloading and running the IE5.5 update and then choosing custom install and uncheck everthing except OE. However, I would recommend updating IE5.5 as well. I haven't had any problems using it and have installed it on every system I service just as part of a normal optimization--making sure everything is current and functioning properly.

I agree with sowulo. Also I don't know if any of you have noticed a difference, but IE5.5 now has a service pack 1 (included with update) that seems a lot less buggy than the first IE5.5 release. If you click on Windows Update in the start bar it will take you directly to the page with IE5.5.1 for download - you don't even have to go into the actual updates page.
