OK scandisk is saying there are errors in the files and directories its listed, the cab files are the ones that windows uses to setup new hardware and stuff.

Do you have the windows 98 disk? You can copy the corrupted cabs from the cdrom to the hard drive. The files in the temp directory can just be deleted.

EDIT: Hmmm just read the file names again, Oracle? Does your friend use oracle?

If windows has a problem copying these files, it could mean you have a problem with the harddrive and you should go to the hard drive manufacturers website to get the disk diagnostics for the drive. With luck that will fix the problem and you can then replace the cab files from the win98 cd.
Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

I dont know about those files, a quick search on google tells me that those files are ODBC oracle files, I know nothing about them though.

Hopefully someone else will happen by this post and work out where they came from.

Exit out ot windows into dos mode.

    at the cursor, type

    scandisk /all /autofix /surface

    and press enter.

When running scandisk, it will do a surface scan to mark off bad clusters.

If it finds any bad clusters, it will mark them off as a red color.

Bad clusters are a sign of eventual drive failure.

You could also run the scandisk surface scan within windows, but I find the dos version to be more thorough.

The oracle files are contained within MDAC or the windows cd. If sql is installed or oracle client. Something has happened to those. You suggest you first try replacing those cabs. Find ORACLE.CAB on the cd and place it into the C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\PWS directory. All else fails go to <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/data/MDAC27Info/en/readmerefresh.htm" target="_blank">http://www.microsoft.com/data/MDAC27Info/en/readmerefresh.htm</a> to read the list of files that will be updated. And <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/data/download_270RTM.htm" target="_blank">http://www.microsoft.com/data/download_270RTM.htm</a> to download it. The easiest solution would probably be replacing the corrupted cabs. Hope this helps.

Also I would suggest clearing all temp directories. And try rerunning scandisk after updating the cabs.
