    unkown error

    hi everyone,

1 certrain cpu keeps on bugging me for errors:

    asus p4s533-mx
    p4 2ghz
    256 mem pc133
    20 gb maxtor
    built in video
    modem on pci

question 1 : is there a program/software package that checks and scans all of the hardware components for error?

my suspect is the Maxtor harddisk, cause when i try to boot the winxp installer for repair it still hangs after a while, i know its not the cdrom or memory, cause upon bootup those are recognized without problems, and to confirm this, the winxp boot cd booted to setup without hanging since I took the maxtor out?.

the weird thing is when i tranfer the Maxtor HD to another cpu I can still pull data from it. so i guess the problem is intermitent. any ideas?

    thanks guys
    what the heck?

Try powermax here @maxtor to test your drive.

hi, it tested ok confused, but then I already replaced 1 stick of the memory and now it seems that the memory is the culprit, i'm observing now, will let you guys know if this is really the case.

But is there a program to test all hardware for trouble?

Haven't used this particular version of the prog, but this is what I've used the last few years.

Sandra is capable of testing & benchmarking, if winows around it is sufficiently 'right' ..

So the problem is with all these 'test it' thingees is that they of course depend on windows 'working' to figure matters out, ok there are dos ones too, but they depend on DOS 'working' too (they can't pick up for instance windows driver issues, because they test stuff in dos !) - so the simple answer is that there are 'No Guaranteed thingees like this' - the 'best' way is testing known 'good' bits alongside 'to be tested' ones

My recommend for 'least likely to be 'wrong' testing thingee' is Aida32 now apparently Everest (not tested - but I'm told its the same) - however thats the windows version, I also have AIDA 16 the dos version, but I dunno where to tell you where to load that from ..

No doubt other folks have recommends too, but me I do it the 'hard' way by testing stuff alongside known good stuff & I never seem to get stuck .. or not often !

Ta ! I figured it was that one, but there were lots of other boxes which looked like they wanted filling in like a 'registration' - I couldn't download yesterday from what I suspected was the link {some russian message appeared ?} (the one you give as it does say aida 16 in 'english' ) - but trying again this morning yields a download ! (so maybe just busy?)- anyway it works !

PC Check (commercial) or Memtester (free) are what I would use to test RAM.

Its from a german company - but I found you an english download for a trial here @ Eurosoft.

Here's Gary's other suggestion of memtester btw (seems very old though - "..The current version is v.2.93.1, dated 26-Apr-2000.." ?!?!)

    This is my 'suggest' - Memtest86 - A Stand-alone Memory Diagnostic & what I use
