I have no search window at all when i click on it in start menu. Also i uninstalled and disabled msn messenger in xp and downloaded the new messenger 6.2 but that comes up with an error saying

    Welcome to Windrivers Sweetpea

Hoe did you uninstall and disable msn messenger? Because it looks like you did a good job, disallowing future installs as well!

When you say "search window" Do you mean the toolbar is missing?

    Hello NooNoo
Ok i uninstalled msn messenger in add and remove programs but i didn't realise xp had there own msn messenger so it didn't remove everything. So i went to another forum that i use and they told me to download a remover.... xp_messenger_remove.vbs.....which worked.
I downloaded the new msn messenger and it installed with no problems and then one day i got the error message and its been like that for weeks. My daughter has her own account on here and when she connects msn starts up with no problem and when we switch to my account i can use messenger as the icon shows up in the task bar.
    Hope this makes sense.

    Hello again...
The search window in start menu where you search for files folders etc isn't opening up when u click on it. Nothing happens at all.

Aaah nothing to do with msn then....

If you double click my computer, there is a search icon on the toolbar... does that work?

Start, run, regedit, now find this key
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{1f4de370-d627-11d1-ba4f-00a0c91eedba}

On the right hand pane, what does it say?

good, well nearly is yours _ or - 30521?

it should be -30521 if its _, that would be the problem.

If it's just a typo try this next

click start, right click on a blank bit of the start menu, click properties

With the dot in the radio button next to start menu, click customize
Click the advanced tab, scroll right the way to the bottom and uncheck search (last square checkbox). ok that and then restart the machine.

The search icon should vanish from you start menu. Now do the process again, only this time checking the search box.... and don't forget to restart BEFORE trying it out.

Never, ever approach a computer saying or even thinking "I will just do this quickly."

OK, get out your xp cd, put it in the cd rom drive. click start, run, and type in
    sfc /scannow
    Then follow the instructions.

This will make xp check all the files.
