Chicago Firemen Strike Out House Fire, Save Pot Worth Millions

CHICAGO -- A fire on the South Side led the law to millions of dollars worth of marijuana.

When firefighters showed up to put out a basement fire in a home in the Gage Park neighborhood Saturday, they found 1,600 pounds of marijuana worth $3.2 million and 35 grams of cocaine worth $4,300.

Fire officials say the fire broke out around 1a.m. at 5030 S. Maplewood Ave. Deering District Capt. Robert Johnson said the small blaze started when a cigarette was left on a mattress. Once fire officials put out the blaze, they noticed several dozen plastic bags and bricks wrapped in clear plastic and contacted police.

Fire officials say the building was not occupied at the time of the fire. Police are still investigating.

Damn, imagine if that stuff went up in the blaze. People would be getting free highs for miles.

Had I been the fireman who found the stash, it would not be on the news, that's for sure.

Nice math. The last I knew an ounce of coke was under $1200. It's got to be even cheaper after all these years.

    1,600 pounds
    $3.2 mill

    $3,200,000 / 1,600 = $2,000.00 per pound

    16 oz per pound
    $2,000 / 16 = $125 per ounce

    $125 / 8 = $15.63

And you can do this in your basement they say?

1600 pounds would fill a very large room completely full. Dam that's a lot of green stuff. I think it was planted...so to speak.

This really got me thinking. A pound is approximately 12"X12"X2" so I've heard. Using those dimensions I came up with 172,800 cubic inches for all that weed.

I have no idea how big that works out to as I've used up my daily dose of math energy, but it's gotta be really big. Maybe someone else could figure it out or I'll try again tomorrow.

    Hmmmm....

Police always way overinflate the price of the drugs they find by divind ing it up to the smallest common unit sold and then multiplying by that price. If you are blowing $2000 on a pound of pot then you are getting royaly ripped off unless it's some hella killer kind bud and yer really hard up for it. The coke price is way out of wack too. Not that I'd know...

Lot smaller than that. They compress it pretty good. if it's fresh buds it fills up a good sized container but once compressed it's about twice the size of a brick.

Well, I think... I mean, I've never seen any of this stuff, just heard about it in skool...

Well, a pound usually fits nicely in a ziplock freezer bag, so picture about 1600 of them stacked in a room.
