win98 first edition updater?
Anyone install this? To update the first edition to second? It looks like a complete win98 install-do you install it over your win98 first edition? And what is the folder called "Bug Fixes"?

Yes, I've seen it and I own a copy of it
It was advertised on the Windows Update site for $9.95 plus shipping, from Microsoft.
The folder called Bug Fixes contained the shutdown supplement and other files that you would of had to download from the Windows Update site.
After the update (which is like a complete install) go to control panel/system and it will show Windows 98 Second Edition.

My personal exp with updates are that if you update any MS os that you are gonna be doing a clean install within a month. whether it was 3.x=95 or 95=98 and so on other than an NT upgrade I allways just back up data and do a clean install. Reguardless of what i am dealing with.
A little note is if you are using an upgrade cd and dont a a full version cd all you need to have on the drive to do a full install is a two files in the c:\windows "win.com and winver.exe" from a previous version i.e. 95 or 98a this will make it think that you have a previous version installed to let you run upgrade cd. Hey, I just did it. I had updated everything there was to update before I decided I wanted ICS. I was really scared because all I ever heard was, "You will have conflicts" It went flawless.
You are right, it sure looked like a full install. I looked at the disk and all the .cab files are there. I wonder if there is a way to bypass having to run setup from Windows?

Thanks for the help. As near as I can tell it is a full version of Win98se, that needs to see win98 first before it will install. When I get a chance I am going to see if it works like other MS upgrades, that is just but the full version win98first cd in the drive when it looks for it, and then do a clean install.

Yes you can do a clean install with the update. A good rule of thumb is if you have to reinstall or update, Make it a clean install to a freshly f/disk and formatted HD
