I wonder if they want us to stay? They have to know what our military capabilities are and maybe it's a feint to get us to leave troops to keep Iraq stable without saying it publicly?

Or more likely they want to attack and finally get back at iraq for the last war the 80's.

It could also be a simple reaction to either defend themselves against American invaders, or to try to keep the 'undesirable' element which is running rampant in Iraq, to flow into Iran.

Or they're hoping for a power vacuum, and an easy occupation.

Figure it this way, Iraq would get a non-US sponsored government, that still has a strong Islamic base....just what the "insurgents" want.

This is retarded. They have to know we would come right back over and hand them their asses if they invaded. I really do expect alterior motive or something we are not privy to.

Actually, we aren't pulling all of our troops out soon, just handing the government over. Troop count stays the similar for some time unless I missed a meeting.

It could very well boil down to a case of them attempting to show their "interest"

    Angry

Could we get a story that is any less detailed, with less explanation of the facts that this? I think we could make one up better than that one. Come on man the source is a Saudi reporter…his quote is bigger than the whole article…

Doesn't seem all that threatening. Probably placed there as self defense in case civil war breaks out in Iraq. Prevent it from spilling over.

Hey Ya_Know, how many troops are there in 4 Marine battalliions? 8,000 or so? Probably closer to 4,000.

How the F- should I_know? I was never a war planner, and I was never in an infantry unit to compare to it. Support and air wing units are designed much differently, which I was in most frequently, so any unit size I had ever seen would be impossible to correlate. Plus, I was never in a deployed unit. Unit size and structure changes on deployment as you absorb other specialized units to make the full force. Additionally, Marines aren’t measured in battalion strength, but in an Expeditionary force or unit strength…which again, is a compilation of several elements, and it’s been a LONG time.

Besides, if we are trying to figure out how big the Iranian battalions are, I think you would be best to consult with someone more aware of their unit designation, and how they distribute forces...for them a battalion could be the same size as one of our Divisions, which could be 20,000 or more…

Maybe the Iranians think that by moving their troops in this position, they can get the U.S. to reconsider pulling out of Iraq. Then world opinion of the U.S. would further decline and the middle east would hate us even more.
