    Toshiba Sattellite DVD problems

    Hi,

I would really appreciatae some help with this - if I need to include some more information here then please say. It's a problem that's been bugging me for many months.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 1800-712 (1.1GHz, 512MB RAM, using Windows XP) and the DVD drive has only ever intermittently worked- sometimes for five-ten minutes perfectly- but then inevitably deteriorating into sticky/slow video and sound.

I have tried a number of codecs, a number of DVD players and even gone so far as to buy an external DVD drive, thinking that it must have been the one inside the Toshiba laptop causing the problem. None of this has worked.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to fix this???

    Thanks,
    YL

So welcome to windrivers YossarianLives! .. but first a 'telling off' !

Please don't make duplicate posts on the same issue you have a duplicate here - if you are getting no replies on it, try the age old post 'bump' technique to bring it to everyones attention ..

Can you confirm for us which XP version ? Home or Pro ?

& is this setup 'yours' or is it from some pre-install or recovery cd ?

Do you have all windows updates applied or not & have you applied sp1 at least ?

Everything 'ancillary' up-to-date, so I mean, especially, chipset patches & directx ?

Visited Tosh's site & checked for any 'stuff' there ..

Details of players & codecs tried might be handy too

Have you any games ? Do they play 'ok' ?

Ok, apologies for duplicating - I don't even know what an "age-old post bump" is. Thanks for replying though.

I've just done the Belarc scan of my computer and it says I've got Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 (build 2600). I haven't knowingly changed the setup, I haven't fiddled with the registry or anything like that. I install updates when Windows tells me to.

In terms of updating ancillary things I have been to the Toshiba website and installed the latest BIOS, and the DVD drive (TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R2102) is made by Toshiba so I imagine updates for that would be there if anywhere. I have DirectX 9. I have also looked through the technical support FAQs for DVDs on the Toshiba website.

In terms of codecs I have a large number installed, but the probelm was evident before I installed them (DivX, Xvid, ffdshow, AC3, MPEG4...). I just ran the GSpot codec detector and it says I have 46 video and 30 audio codecs loaded, but as I say the problem existed before I started installing these to play .avi files.

I don't really play any games on this laptop so can't say whether they work.

I'd be very grateful for any ideas. YL.

PS. I received a PM from another user of this site who says he has the same probelm with this model of laptop.

Am I busy answering that or a user called NooNoo ? (she's the site mod ) I think that ones to do with a dirty lens ? - if you think its related to this, put me a link in your answer so I know which one exactly

Have you tried Dxdiag.exe ? Directx diagnostic (either that at 'run' or start, all programs, accessories, system tools, system information, then there's an option on that under 'tools' )

..the DVD drive has only ever intermittently worked- sometimes for five-ten minutes perfectly- but then inevitably deteriorating into sticky/slow video and sound ..
This'd be the guts of whats wrong - so can you just go over that bit again giving me as much info as you can ? - Too many processes {programs} at once could be an obvious thing - as could 'malware' - do you know what the 'hell' I'm talking about with that ?

Once you've answered that lot I think we can have a 'stab' at a few things

The PM wasn't from NooNoo, I don't think the sender had posted his own thread; he just wanted me to tell him if it got fixed.

I've just run the DirectX diagnostic tool, running all the additional tests and no problems were found.

As far as the actual problem is concerned, it has always happened to a certain extent, but has gradually deteriorated over time. The player used to work for an hour or two fine, and then gradually there would be at first infrequent but increasingly long and frequent stickiness/choppiness in the sound and vision. The last time I tried it it worked for something like 30 seconds and then deteriorated rapidly. Sometimes I can restart the computer and it would give good performance, almost as though the lens had to 'cool down', but the problems would sure enough start again.

I've tried ending as many processes as it would let me through Task Manager, but this has no effect. And no, I don't know what the hell malware is!

Considering how many toshiba dvd drive problems there are posted on this forum alone, I would be thinking that toshiba have a problem with their drives dying prematurely.

Well indeedy doody , which was why I was trying to find out if it linked to the one on lens cleaners.. I've a feeling this one looks to be out of warranty though ?

For YossarianLives! : Malware is a collective term for 'net nasties' & covers Viruses, worms, Trojans & spyware & various other 'technically distinct whatsits' - have a look at this thread started by Noo - How to fix popups, spyware, malware and nuisance programs - it'll give you a 'start' at least - if you have specific questions arising from that, then just ask away

I'd like you as 'an experiment' to see if you can aquire yourself a big fat mpeg or avi (something 10 minutes or longer with sound & video anyway ) & try playing that - this should 'pin' for us whether its the DVD unit itself or perhaps something else - I think if this 'works' then we know its physically the DVD unit itself

I've been able to play .avi files well in excess of 10mins perfectly well for a while now (this is the reason for the number of codecs) which makes me think the problem is a hardware one but, as I mentioned above, I recently tried an external DVD drive which plugged into the PC card slot and the performance was identically bad.

Sorry dude ..'failure to read earlier posts properly syndrome' applies !

So of course if it happens with an external unit as well, then its software ! Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh !

So go look at possible malware issues (as you say) & if I see a big fat HijackThis log as the next post, I shan't be overly surprised ..

The original setup of the machine itself might still possibly be in question, as this has 'always' happened ? & you've never tried a fresh install ?

Right, I'll run the malware things as described in NooNoo's post and get back with the HijackThis log.

When I say it's always hapenned I think it just feels like it - I remember myself being quite happy with it until around the time I left my last uni (which was almost 12 months ago and 10 months into using the laptop) so I don't thinik it could be the original setup. I haven't tried a fresh install and am probably irrationally reluctant to do so.

I'm grateful for any help you're willing to give me util you say that's my last option!

Ok, I've run the spyware things and they didn't come up with anything that looks especially insidious. I hope you're ready for this though, the HijackThis log:
