WinXP Home -- Need Help Quick...
I have a user running Windows XP Home Edition. Every time he tries to logon, I get an error message as follow:
Windows Product Activation
An error occurrred while the wizard was checking the current Window product license. Error Code: 0x80040507
I googled the error code and tried a few things, such as deleting temporary internet files, ran adaware & spybot with no help. Scanned for viruses (clean). Tried repairing the XP installation (no help). Ran SFC /scannow. Don't want to reload if at all possible.
I've tried logging on as a new user with Administrative rights & one with limited rights, still no help. Also the software is definitely legit as we sold it to him & installed it for him. System has been running for approx. 1 year. The only real change as of late is that he downloaded the newest version of adaware and installed it.
Just out of curiosity, I looked in the backup from Spybot 1.3 & saw a slew of Microsoft entries such as Internet explorer and Windows registry. I tried restoring those backups as well.
Sorry about the long post, just trying to give as much info as possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PS -- I also tried searching the MSKB, but there is absolutely nothing worth while in there.

Not you're exact error, but in a pinch, using the repair option it referes to may get you out of trouble...
"Error Code: 0x80004005” error message when you install Windows XP

This could be caused by Wintools.... a particularly nasty huntbar offshoot...
wtoolsa.exe
wtools.exe
wtoolss.exe
wsup.exe
belt.exe
Got any of those files mentioned anywhere?

Thanks noo, but I've looked for those already as we've had an onslaught of wintools and such in the past few weeks. Trying Ya_Know's suggestion right now. BTW, Ya_Know, thanks for the tools to blank the admin password for XP last week -- works great.
Will post back after trying Ya_Know's idea...
Thanks again for the help.

Tried your suggestion, Ya_Know, and it at least got me to the point that I can logon, still getting some errors, but I'll research them now. Thanks for the help and enjoy your 4th.
