see, this thread is not helping me...lol

I am leaning towards nvidia due to cost and my being pretty broke. I have a Ti4200 that is good but I want a bit more.

What I really need is a good guide too the deferences in same chips. Ie. ultra vs. non ultra or the various ATI grades of cards.

I have used nvidia since my first TNT card and like to stay brand loyal. However, if I have a house with both AMD and Intel machines running, how loyal am I? I am willing to try ATI if I heard a good arguement for it.

PS are these new 3rd party ATI cards any good?

Personally I don't think you can go wrong with any card you choose as long as it is fairly current. Nvidia seems to have a little more processor power while ATI seems to have slightly more functionality. It's hard to find a side by side comparison of the two brands because they have so many models to choose from. It also depends on what you want to use it for. Like if you are a hard-core gamer, then I would check out reviews from the game manufacturers. For instance, CoH recommends Nvidia for best performance. Also the parts in your PC play a role. Like some motherboards prefer Nvidia cards while others seem to prefer ATI. I chose the FX 5700 Ultra because I knew I wanted Nvidia out of loyalty. I didn't want to spend an entire paycheck on a video card so I went with something fairly current and reasonably affordable with a decent amount of performance (maximumpc.com has great reviews on hardware). The LE ended up not quite being a enough (thanks for the tips on that Cobra) and the Ultra cost only a tid-bit more and had quite a bit better performance (approx 275MHz gpu compared to like 400MHz I think, don't quote me on those exact numbers).

If numbers are what you are looking for, then write down all the models you are looking at, google them, print out all the specs and line them up side by side comparing everything from cost to performance. Either way, no matter what you do, you can always exchange it within 30 days if you're not satisfied.

Of course Larommi will never read this being that I'm on his infamous "list"

You could always go for a non-ultra and mod it into an Ultra, both Nvidia and ATI users are doing it and there are plenty of articles to help out.

I can spend whatever I want but would prefer to keep it around 200 bucks. I usually buy an older card when new ones come out and the price comes down. I dont need anything cutting edge just something better.

I am not really running a poll of what is better, I would just like to see some good arguements of why. I have used nvidia since my TNT card but would try ATI if someone could sell me on it.

I use ATI pretty much exclusively but I have used some nvidia.
I think the main reason is ati as well as omega write a lot better drivers in the last 3 yrs then they used to. As a matter a fact they have been rock solid for that time. I also like ATI because of the extra video capabilities like capture and stuff
    Just my 2 cents

Went with ATI for no other reason than they had one at the store where I got my LCD monitor.
