Newb with a Comp...
Disclaimer: Sorry if this is in the wrong place.
So I got my own comp and I loaded it up with some pretty sweet stuff, and it handles games friggin awesome, which was the plan. The only problem is that lately i've been getting lots of spyware and stuff. I went to the section in this category on how to get rid of spyware and stuff and I downloaded it but it doesn't seem to be working. I still have DSO Exploit, can't seem to get rid of that, and my homepage keeps getting changed to this: res://mdrty.dll/index.html#37680 . I've gone in the HKEY folder and tried to fix it, and the SpyWare Blaster and tried to fix it but no luck. I also get this REALLY annoying thing whenever something opens that requires the internet (like Internet Explorer and AIM and Xfire) that says I need to install stuff for Microsoft Word and Powerpoint and stuff, (I can't get my Word and stuff to work.)
PLEASE HELP!
-Thank you

Welcome to WD Petary791 .
Did you update those programs after installing them and run them in SafeMode ?
Have you run 'HijackThis' and fixing the things you know don't belong ?
You can post a 'HijackThis' log here if needed to help find all the nasty stuff .

Spy help
First I suggest getting Mozilla Firefox http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
I think it is much better then internet explorer and I have had no spy wear, pop ups or any problems with it. but if you don’t want to swap hear are some suggestions.
I would get a few things to run to fix you spy wear needs first I would get Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3 from www.download.com , also a good clean up program is cleanup.exe just google it ( it will delete all you cookies history and stuff on you browser ), a good program to fix lots of stuff is also CWShredder it will fix you internet browser say if you cant change you home page or something like that (hijacked). But what I would suggest is to get off the internet explorer and swap to Mozilla Firefox http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ (and O ya, or you can just lay off the porn that is where most spy **** come from)

Are you running a firewall? You can remove crapware 'til you're blue in the face, but w/o a firewall it will come back. Good free one is zonealarm. Will also notify you when unauthorized programs are trying to connect out.

I've updated everything, which I do on a regular basis. I have not run them in Safemode, i'll try that. I have run 'HiJack This' and like, quite a few things popped up and I got rid of all of it.
I'll try the Safemode thing, then i'll get back to you.

I hope I'm not taking this too literally. You don't want to get rid of "All of it" when you run hijack this. Some of that stuff is usefull!

Oh yeah, I figured out that before I started deleting stuff. I just checked out the stuff and I could tell which was bad so I got rid of that.
Whoever suggested Firefox, I praise you. I've had it for 2 days and not 1 pop up. It's amazing.
I tried running my comp in safe mode, but I guess i'm not hitting F8 at the right time. Can someone help me with the whole safe mode thing?

If you can't get f8 key to go through - it needs to be pressed a couple of times just before windows starts to load... then you can try holding the ctrl key down while switching on the computer and continue to hold it till you get the menu.
If all else fails, you can annoy windows by turning it off as it is starting up... then it should automatically boot to the menu to allow you to choose safe mode.

If he's using like XP couldn't they just go to 'msconfig' and select SafeBoot and restart ?
