Connection Problem

My computer is giving me problems when I am using the internet. I start browsing, everything works fine. Few minutes later it all fails, I try to surf a web page and it doesnt connect to it, I try to send and instant message and it can't be sent. If I reboot, it starts working again, but still fails again. I know it's not the connection itself because it works on other computers just fine.

I installed new drivers for the ethernet (Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast ethernet NIC) and still having the same problem.

Im running XP Pro on a Compaq Presario 700.
Can anyone help me???

I have the same problem (well somewhat) my connection runs but IE fails to open any new pages except for teh one i'm on. I've tried different browsers and also updated my NIC, no fix yet. Only a restart will help.

Techzhave you tried these fixes?
Are you sure the box "reuse window" is unchecked in advanced in tools options? And Techz, start your own thread!

Psyko - have you checked for spyware? How long before it dies, is it the same amount of time each time? How do you get connected to the internet? Do you have a router? Is this a network with a server?

Sorry NooNoo, but i think i did post that query in another thread that i had started, cant find where right now, i wasnt looking for an answer but just saying that its happenned to me too.

yes, i have SpyBot - Search and Destroy and no spyware is present except for a DSO Exploit. Can that be it??? The time it takes for it to die is random, it can take 1 minute it can take 20, it's never the same. Im connected thru cable modem no router.

Psykoangel - just want to clarify that you put the cable modem directly to your computer, and when you tried other computers, you put the cable modem directly to them too....?

Please do this:

Start, run type in
cmd
in the black box that opens type in
ipconfig /all

copy the results into a post please.

Last question, did you get the new drivers from compaq or realtek?

One more thing to try. Go into device manager (right click my computer, properties, 3rd tab - hardware, middle button device manager)
Double click on network adapters
Double click on your realtek and on the properties that pops up, click on power management. Is the check box ticked that allows XP to shut down the nic to save power? If so, uncheck it. Apply. Reboot and see.

This computer was originall running XP Home, after a few years I formatted and installed XP Pro. The drivers where the ones that XP Setup installed, then i installed the ones from RealTek and it still fails.

I tried uncheking the power management thing and still fails.

The lease is short but should not be causing the problem unless the loss of connectivity is after the lease expires.

If the network card supprts power management ensure the box is not check "Allow the computer to shut down this device to save power"

psykoangel, each time this happens, immediately do an ipconfig /all and note the dhcp lease start and expiry times - see if they coincide. Also make a note of your ip and see if it changes.
