Anyone got a modded console?
I recently had my xbox modded and at first I was having reservations about it but now, I think it's the best thing I've ever done for it. The xbox at my house is used by my entire family and we have a very extensive collection of games, but now with a 120 gig HD I've copied the most used games onto the HD and the kids don't even need to get out their dvd of simpsons or toejam and earl. They love it. Plus there's some homebrew versions of classic games like pacman and digdug that my wife loves to play along with her tiger woods and gauntlet legends. But by far the best thing has to be Xbox Media Centre. This little gem of software is real great, it allows the xbox to play media off my main computer via SMB. so now instead of having to go to my pc, the family just turns the xbox on and they can play mp3's or movies that are stored on my pc regardless of wheter i'm on it or not.
Either way, I higly recommend modding your xbox if you want the most out of it.
Today, a haiku:

of repeating crap

Sweet. Is there any links or information on exactly how to mod it safely and effectively without damaging it? I could google for an answer,.. but if you have any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Check out www.xbox-scene.com especially the tutorials section which are filled with info. I compare that site as the windrivers of the xbox world. I got my chip soldered on by a pro (who installed most of the software) for $100. The chip I got was an xcuter 2 pro, but if you want to do yours easy, you can get the solderless version which can be attached easily.

Cool. Good info guys. I'll take a closer look when I get home tonight and see if it's something I want to do. Sounds interesting.

i also modded one of my xboxes a while back..and it is one of the best things i could have done. I got the xecuter 2.3b lite chip and soldered it in myself (which had horrible results, so i took it to my friend's dad who soldered it up right for me) and i installed the software and stuff myself. it was a challenging expereince..but quite rewarding.
i installed a 120gb seagate hard drive in it also, which is just about full. i have around 40 of my games ripped to the hard drive, so i dont need to get the discs out to play them(great for traveling with the xbox) and also a few emulators. now instead of hooking up my SNES, i can play my snes games on the xbox. and while i havent tried it yet..last night i found DoomX, which is a port of the pc version of doom that runs on the xbox. i just need to get out my doom CD and grab the .wad file.
the xbox media center is really cool..although i havent set up the SMB shares yet. it can play streaming internet radio, and even check the weather. although for some reason mine wont play DVD movies.(to play DVDs, i have to lock the hard drive, and boot with the chip disabled, so it boots up just like it did when i bought it)
i havent attempted to connect to xbox live yet..but the chips do have a switch so you can turn them off. i have a second xbox i use for playing online..so i havent really needed to try it with this one(if you connect to live with the chip turned on, your xbox will be banned from xbox live)
also, there is this great feature....in game reset. so i can turn on my xbox, choose a game from the hard drive..play it for a while...then when i am done playing that game, i hold down 4 buttons (start, back, L, and R) and it resets the xbox and takes me back to the Evox dashboard..where i can choose another game, or launch an emulator, go to media center, go to the MS dashboard..or just about anything i want. when i am all done , i go back to the dashboard, and choose shut down and it powers off the xbox. it is so nice..the only time you have to get up is to turn the xbox on...or if you want to play a game from the disc.
for anyone who is considering it..go for it...it is awesome.
Some people are like Slinkies . . . not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs

I got my PlayStation (original) modded in the day, but unfortunately the PAL CDs don't all work properly.
As it was an exchange of services for some graphics work, I was rather happy about the deal anyhow.
When I read the title of this thread, I thought we were going to be talking about modding the actual box of the console, which is something else I'd like to try on the PS. Maybe even the PS2...
