Device Manager drops DVD Drive
I have a system that I built which contains one DVD R/W and one DVD ROM. I set them up so that the R/W is on IDE #1 and is master (no other drives on IDE #1. The DVD Rom is sharing IDE # 2 as master with an 80 G Hard Drive as slave.
My boot drive is SATA. Everything seems to work well except the system loses the DVD ROM from the Device Manager usually after I have used either of the DVD drives. It locks up the DVD ROM, but not the system. The drive light stays on and I have to re-boot to open the drive and remove the disc. Once I re-boot the drive is again recongonized in the Device Manager. Any ideas??

I believe that the HDD is master and the DVD RON is slave, but I'll have to check that to be sure. It's 2:30 AM and I'm getting a little spacy. What's your point? Should the DVD be Master???

This could be that the dvdrom cannot use dma, where as the dvdrw may want.... do you have dma enabled on both?
I would put the dvdrom without dma for the time being to see if things improve.

GrandDad you got me looking in the right direction. I changed the DVD ROM to Master and the additional HD (non-booting) to slave and it's been working fine. Thanks for your help!
