Hey GrandDad!
I'm using Windows XP & its a laptop (Sony VASIO - 2.8 GHz, Pentium4, 512 MB ram).
They are dvd-rw's. And their are mostly series, movie files on the dvds.
I used maxell dvd-rws and varioius kinds of cd-rws.
thankx.

Wind, grandad was hoping for actual model numbers so the specifications can be checked and updates looked for.
Which sony Vaio? The dvd burner came as part of the laptop or is an external burner?
What dvd playing software do you use?
What burning software do you use?
Windows XP - is it updated to sp1? All the other windows updates in place?

OK so test the drive, get your restore cd and start the computer with the restore cd in... does it start the computer?
You may need to change the bios to boot from cd - check your user guide how to set the laptop to boot from cd.
There are some important fixes with sp1 - it is highly recommended that you get sp1 and install it from windows update.
