No sound-SB Live! 5.1 and WinME

Just as the subject line says. I've tried uninstalling, reloading in safe mode, blah blah blah. I can't get sound at all. When I put the sound card in and restart the computer, it basically stalls during automatic plug & play. Please help!

We need a lot more info than you have listed here, to be of any help to you. We know that the Os is WinME, but that’s about it. What’s the motherboard model, chip set, what type of CPU is it, and any other components that make up your computer? ie: HP, Compaq, Gateway or others.

Sorry. It's a Dell Dimension L866r, PIII 866MHZ, 256MB of RAM; That's about all I know. How can I find the relevent info that you need?

Is this a retail version of the SB Live 5.1, or a version obtained through Dell? If retail, are you using the latest driver SBL51_W9xME.exe?: http://us.creative.com/support/downl...ows+Millennium

Does your PC also have onboard audio? If so, is it disabled in bios?

Does the card currently appear in device manager? If so, is there an error code?

It's a retail version.

How do I find out if I have onboard sound, and if I do, how do I turn it off?

The error code keeps telling me that the driver is not loading. I install the driver from the Installation CD, but it still doesn't work.

I have tried using SBL51_W9xME.exe, but it says it's only for SB Live 5.1 and it doesn't recognize that I have the 5.1 card installed.

This is really irritating, since I haven't had sound for about 2 months. I almost had sound at one time, but there seems to be something wrong with the system.ini file.

To check for onboard sound, go into bios and look for a prompt to disable onboard sound. To access the bios, power off then press the del key (F1 or F10 if that doesn't work) after powering on.

What is the exact part number printed on the card?

I don't have onboard sound, so that's not an issue I guess.

The Creative Soundblaster part number is SB0220

Which slot did you put it in? And for goodness sake, do NOT lose the cd!!!

The dell model you have posted IS supplied with a soundcard (which may be a separate card or onboard) Did you remove the old sound card? It was also a creative card.

this shows the bios setup screens Table 4. Peripheral Configuration Submenu Options is where the onboard audio is enabled or disabled. If it's not there at all, you had a pci card instead. If it was a card, then the original configuration is the audio goes in pci slot 2.

The old card is long gone. I installed the new card in slot B (same as #2?). Should I use Windows PnP or the CD to install everything?

The card should detect and not find the drivers. The device manager should show it as a pci multimedia device.

Put the cd in and run the setup (or if it autoplays use the menu system to install it). Reboot... and that should be it.

I put the card in, restarted, and it hangs up on startup. I can't get this damned thing to work.

OK, remove the card entirely. Reboot and go into windows safe mode, clear out any and all software and drivers from creative - check in device manager and in add/remove programs. Turn off system restore so windows doesn't helpfully put it back. Go through the registry looking for the creative entries and export and delete them.

Now put the card back in say slot 3 and go straight into bios setup.... carry out clearing nvram this forces the bios to re evaluate the hardware connected. Now boot to windows.... does it still hang?

How do I export and delete Creative registry items. I'm not sure I'm comfortable doing that...
