win xp "internet gateway"

since reformatting the other day, windows xp has detetected my smoothwall firewall/router and installed a new little animal that resides in the taskbar and network connections called internet gateway. its a fairly benign little thingy, and helpfully detects when smoothwall is actually connected to the internet, although obviously the connect and disconnect functions do not work.
The only concern is the amount of network activity it generates. even when idle it generates about 1mbps of activity and generally seems to increase traffic between this computer and the smoothwall box. it is difficult to judge internet speed, but it does actually seem to have speeded up a bit which is very nice, altthough hard to explain.
not sure that i appreciate the increased network traffic, and am very confused to what it is actually doing to generate a such a significant constant usage.
anyone come across this before?

ok this is really becoming a problem now... the network is being swamped by useless traffic going to and from the router. why does windows xp do this? grrrr. in any case how can i turn it off?

Edit the boot/startup files so it doesn't run and reboot?

Have you tried removing in safe mode?

It is indeed optional, and UPnP is not a good thing according to grc.com. But, read here for details:

I read Internet Gateway as the XP version of Internet Connection Sharing.

Try to uninstall IC in safe mode as mentioned in above posts.

Are your other PC's using the XP box as the gateway or the smoothwall? There really should be no reason for the box to generate large amounts of traffic unless there is something else wrong. Broadcast traffic is just small amounts and usually incoming. What are you using to gauge how much traffic is coming in and out of the XP box?

Thats a good link. I have removed it in the past by re-running the network setup wizard.

It is, but that is only part of it. It is also used along with UPnP(ray) for hardware networking devices:

If your home network has an Internet gateway device, you can use Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control (IGDDC) to monitor and configure the device’s Internet connection from any computer connected to your home network and running Windows.

IGDDC works with residential gateways, Wi-Fi wireless base stations, and computers configured for Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).

If you go into Control Panel/Install/uninstall Software/Windows Components/Networking Services you'll see both UPnP and Internet Gateway Device Detection there.
I also wondered about the "traffic" and his actual connection. But, the simple fact is that it can be disabled/uninstalled.
