    Post Sloooooooooooooow menu.

    I have a P200 MMX, 64MB RAM, 8.4GB HD running Windows 98 4.10.1998, and IE 5.0.

Everything about my computer works great.
My problem is whenever I try to access the "New" menu it takes anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes to bring up the list of new items I can create.
I've tried right clicking and selecting new and using the file menu and selcting new.. the result is the same no-matter what.
I figured maybe I just have too many things in my new menu so I used TweakUI to disable some.
    No effect.
Then I removed them completely, still nothing.
As it is right now I only have "Folder", "Text Document", and "Shortcut" that I can create and it still takes that long.
I even tired using several programs to alter my disk cache.. and nothing.
Please help, this is very annoying. Any advice at all would most appreciated.
    Thank you.

I know that this isn't much help, but I have 7 computers that I maintain, and every one of them acts tha same way, So if there is a way to correct this I'd like to know also!

As a second note to you, I have found that the right click, works the quickest!

Unfortunately, Redbeard's right. I have never used a Win9x machine that doesn't show this behavior with the New menu. On the bright side, it doesn't happen with Win2K, and hopefully that means it will be fixed for WinME as well.

It is true all systems show this behaviour.
The things that can improve the condition are removing some items from the menu and incresing the general menu speeds by using a Power teak such as TweakUI. You can also find programs that change the new menus behaviour totally. Route around the freeware sites!

    Cool

In response to The-Fro, it HAS been fixed in WinME. It's about time.

Two questions. First, how big is your swapfile? Second, how many tasks do you have running when you press Ctrl-Alt-Del? Something could be hogging the system resources behind the scenes.

I don't want to boast but I dont get any hassle with 98 and the new menu. I've got a PII 400 which I use at work.
Have you tried turning off the animated menu? In Display Properties on the effects tab. Also as RFmathis said check resources.
If you are OK for downloading stuff. I'd also see what updates are on Windows Update.
