new build very slow

I have a machine here that has win98se and the following components

Athlon xp 2600
512 PC2700 DDR Ram
56x cdrom
40 gb WD hard drive
AD77 motherboard
fx5200 256mb video

It is a fairly recent build but it's running very slow. After correcting a few things ( including uping the fsb to where it was suppose to be . ) while booting or performing any task the mouse is extremely sluggish. several things have improved performance but nothing has cured the problem. Besides the mouse being sluggish the tasks ( like opening device manager) are extremely slow considering the system. It doesn't act this way in safe mode.

Any ideas welcome

Test the hard drive first. But, considering you say safe mode is fine, it looks to be drivers or os issues. Try a parallel install to really find out.

Don't know that this is all of your issues, but is it on a network? If not, and it has a NIC in it, 98 takes onhelluva long time to boot if it is looking for a DHCP server and there is not one there. If you have a NIC and are not using it - disable it or assign it some random static IP.

thanks all for the quick responses. I'm removing the drivers for the fx5200 and installing a gf2 just to see what happens. Also it does have a nic but it is not installed ( no driver ) I'll pull that too.....

That's a nice system...why 98 and not XP???

Since you have 512 MB's installed and not more, and you're not getting any errors, I don't think this is the answer to your problem, but it might still be worth looking into...

Not sure why he put 98 on it. Maybe he already had it not sure... thanks for that link.... i was aware of the problems but didn't remember where that was...

Well I reset the cmos to defaults..... and then went through and checked the settings.... I didn't see anything different but now it works..... thanks all...
