    What happens when....

Hey guys, didn't know where to post this, thought this might be the best spot.. I was just wondering if anyone knew, or would care to hypothesise why, when a dial-up connection (or perhaps any internet connection, i just only noticed with dial up) is terminated, all of windows grinds to a halt for a moment and the hard drive goes nuts and then all is ok.

I was just wondering what the computer is actually doing at that time? Telling all the apps that internet is no longer on? Updating log files for the goddamn modem? Just wondering. THanks guys.
    Porn! It's cheaper than dating!

My theory is that since all modems are software modems whenever you dial or disconnect you are getting a "surge" of needed CPU power that slows everything down...I could be totally wrong, but sounds good enough for me!

    Not all modems are soft

It could be the modem cpu cycles, yes... but I would look to see what else is using that connection that may be doing a shutdown of it's own.... ie a trojan.
