D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function

Hey folks,

I've looked over this site and seen a number of posts about this problem but none have been exactly like my problem. Also, I don't understand some of the advice so I'm hoping that someone will be able to talk me through this problem, if anyone's up for tackling it.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop, purchased in Aug. 2001. It used to run on Windows Millennium but I switched to Windows 2000 Professional this year.

I've always had kind this annoying problem but it's gotten worse now. It used to be that the computer would take a number of tries to recognize a CD when I put it into the D:\ drive. Now it will not read blank CD-RW's or CD-R's at all, so that I can't backup information anymore. It used to do it eventually, just after a few tries. Now I always get the same message, "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function."

However, it has never had a problem reading DVD's or music CD's or CD's to download programs, etc, only blank CD-RW's or CD-RW's that have been burned on my computer.

Now, though, it only seems to happen with blank CD-RW's, blank CD-R's and CD-RW's with information on them. I have one CD-R, for example, which was burned on my computer which I can read, no problem. Other CD-R's burned on other computers, no problem. I have a CD-RW, however, that was burned on my computer which now does not have the PowerPoint presentation on it which I burned on it; instead it has two things, one entitled "Udfrinst.exe" and another called "Autorun.inf." I don't know what these are so I have not opened them.

I have AVG as my virus protection software and Nero as my burning software. Any advice?

Welcome to Windrivers Herb

I had this problem, and I updated the IDE Controller driver for the motherboard and all was fine after that. It might be worth contacting Dell for the latest drivers for your chipset (which I think maybe Intel) and telling them it's now 2000 and not Millenium.

Update the drivers and all should be well....

If you go to the Dell website, you can enter your service tag number and search yourself, if it looks confusing come back here and ask, and someone will help.

Ok, Cortuba, or anyone else who can help.

I went to the Dell website and searched for my IDE driver. It gave me the following options for drivers to download:

Hitachi DK23CA 10/20/30GB Notebook Hard Drive
Hitachi DK23DA-20F Mobile Hard Disk Drive
Hitachi DK23DA-30F Mobile Hard Disk Drive
Hitachi DK23DA-40F Mobile Hard Disk Drive
IBM IC25T060ATCS05 (60GB) Mobile Hard Disk Drive

Which one is it? I went online and asked at the Dell support site but I haven't received a response yet and I was wondering if you would know by looking at this which one is the Controlling driver for the motherboard. Maybe I didn't do a proper search. Thanks,

The ide driver is sometimes known as the chipset driver.... what is the service tag for the machine?

I think I solved the problem by downloading the Roxio 5.0 update and new drivers...I realized that my computer needed to use Roxio, because of the way that the Inspiron 8100's are organized (couldn't explain the details). But since I had uninstalled Roxio when I changed operating systems, it wasn't working to burn CD's with Nero for whatever reason. Installing the new drivers also should fix the previous problems with the CD-RW drive (before I had taken Roxio off).

Someone, "Predator", from the Dell forum helped me out. Thanks for following up with this, though.
