SONY VAIO R505JL DVDs WONT PLAY....HELP!
I have had my SONY VAIO for 2.5 years and NEVER had a problem playing DVDs. Now the combo drive will play CDs, CD ROMs but not DVDs. I have tried everything on the troubleshooting menus. The systems info says everything is working properly!?!
Can someone help?

The bad news first... this is a problem that a number of people have encountered, from what I can tell is that the dvd is a separate laser to the cd side of things. The dvd laser has died and will no longer play dvds - but it will continue to function as a cd.
Now to test that, the best thing to do is put the drive in another system and see if the results are the same. Have you tried reading a data dvd?

Thank you for your response. You have to forgive me I am not very tech savy. How would I put the drive in another system, and what would be an example of a data DVD? Thanks again!
