are u setting them up correctly ? using the jumpers at the back ,,,,(NORMALLY) one should be set to MA (master) and the other to SL (slave) ,,,,when u go into the bios , does it autodetect them?
when the machine starts , does the bios screen(black/white with info) show the cd-s?
I take it that all this work has been going on , with the machine turned off
". i followed the directions (which where not detailed at all) and it told me too restart my computer."
gets me wondering , about restarting the computer

First off, thnx for replying. i dont know too much bout the detailed stuff with my computers like the bios and what not... i guess u can call me a rookie heh. i had a guy do one of them before, and i watched what he did. he showed me everything he did (which wasnt much) i had a cd-rom already in which died out. so i bought the dynex. i turned off my computer, unplugged the the old one. and i put the new one in and plugged it all back in. and restarted my computer. and when the local computer guy did it, it detected new hardware and installed it. but it didnt do it with me. i tried to search for new hardware and it didnt detect anything. so im stumped.

look at the pins on the back of the old and new ,cd-roms they should be set the same MA SL orCS ,,,when the computer starts ,,and shows your cpu memory etc ,,,does it show the cd-rom(dvd) ,,,what make of computer is it ,,,is it a brand name? ,,,,forget windows for now ,,we need to see if your computer can see the drive

it is a gateway, the old one had a yellow thing over the MA, and the new one has a thing over SL. my computer never showed anything like that on startup. it only shows my new graphics card and then it just shows gateway and a loading bar.
