Yes Grisoft provide a legitimate freeware version 6 and a paid for version 7,both are more than adequate for the home user and they both have frequent updated DAT files.
A tweak for the freeware version so that it may access more download sites for the updates [because the paid for version has priority] is to change the url.ini within the Grisoft folder to:
[SERVER NAME]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe
Actual URL=3

Everyone will have their own favourite security tools and as you know at WD Techz no one normally has the same opinion and some even have two

Intel Mod
I've used AVG free successfully since swapping when what became E-Trust stopped being free.

Agree and an addition!
I've used AVG 6 since the beginning of the year with no problem.
I yanked Norton out at the time and have no regrets - and I have a more stable computer while saving myself some cash in the process.
I do a monthly online scan with one company or another as a 'belt-and-suspenders' kinda move (as I did with Norton) and no surprises have been discovered.
Re: Archer's URL.ini tweak - these alternate sites were discovered by many during some 'down time' with AVG's default server back in February and, after all that, here's a view of my AVG's URL.ini file -
[SERVER_NAME]
1=free.grisoft.cz
2=ftp.grisoft.com
3=www.grisoft.com
4=download.grisoft.cz
[SERVER_URL]
1=http://free.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe
2=ftp.grisoft.com/pub/softw/60/fe/
3=http://www.grisoft.com/softw/60/fe/
4=http://download.grisoft.cz/softw/60/fe/
Actual URL=4
Note the addition of download.grisoft.cz and because I use that as my default, the actual URL=4 refers to that in the list. The others are available via the dropdown in Update Manager of AVG.
As he says in another post, everyone will have their own fav as far as AV programs go - NOD32, F-Secure, Kapersky in retail, AVG, Avast, Anti-Vir in freeware - but in the end it all comes down to 'does it work?' and 'is it user-friendly to make work?' AVG does both for me.
