drivers not loading
I reinstalled windows 98 Second Edition.
However, I have now audio.
I get the following errors in Device Manager.
? Other devices
?! PCI Multimedia Audio Device
?! PCI System Management BUS
I have BI440ZX motherboard,
The audio is on the motherboard.
I downloaded the latest driver for my audio system -
Creative Sound Blaster Drivers Version 5.12.01.4032B Enh WDM for BI440ZX from the intel site.
I installed the driver and still get the same errors.
I tried removing them and rebooting, but
When the system reboots, it steps me through the wizard but in the end can not find a driver -- Unable to locate a driver for the device.
Any ideas on what I should try next?
Thanks

Welcome sjn to Windrivers.
Did you try uninstalling the hardware. By going to Start>Setting>Control Panels>Add/Remove Hardware?
Extract the files, Then when it asks for the driver choose other location or Find them your self (I think) and look for the files and try installing them.

The system management bus is part of the motherboard drivers which 98 should have
I usually suggest that you try the vxd instead of the wdm drivers for sound ... but intel have only supplied the wdm version.
When you double clicked the bicrew98.exe, did it unpack files into a directory? If so you can manually update the sound (mulitimedia audio device) from the drivers tab of the property sheet for it in device manager and browse to the unpacked files.
For the system management bus - in bios, is pnp os aware set to on or off?

I tried uninstalling the devices.
In device mgr, I right click on the two devices and remove them.
I then reboot and the the system recognized that new hardwar is attached.
Prior to rebbot, the bicrew98.exe was run and the files were unzipped to a folder on my desktop.
I step through the "Update Device Driver Wizard" and attempt to load the driver by selecting the folder with the unzipped files but I get the message stating "Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device".
In the BIOS, the PnP OS aware is set to "yes".

Try setting it to no.
Also move the files from your desktop to a standard folder - it will make browsing for them easier.

I moved the folder to the c: drvie and tried reinstalling the driver and still get the same error.
also tried setting Pnp to no and tried reloading the driver..
Same error...
Almost to the point of reloading the OS again..but I don't really want to go there again if I can avoid it.

Reloading 98 over the top is not painful - just the windows updates have to be applied again.
When you say the same error - did you mean there was not driver for the sm bus device?
Have you checked with windows updates? Sometimes it offers drivers that sort this type of problem.

Same error was for attempting to reload the multimedia audio driver
"Unable to locate a driver for the device"..
If you mean the intel web site, that is where I obtained the Sound Blaster Audio PCI 128 Drivers for the Intel BI440ZX Motherboard
There was no drivers at the same site for the PCI MGT bus.

But it can't have or there wouldn't be any yellow '!' in device manager, well definately not for that !
So that means, despite windows knowing about the chipset, bios isn't signalling it right perhaps ? - strangely there's a bios update for that board here - have we tried applying that ?

I have not tried the bios update because the original install of the OS did not require the BIOS update (according to manufacturer of the PC)

I downloaded the BIOS update and ran it then rebooted.
Same probelms exist..can't load the drivers (same error) and still have no audio...

Do you have an entry 'acpi' in bios? if so whats it set as ?
& if you open device manager & view 'computer' by resources, if you look at the IRQs are there any entries sharing ?
What is the actual message on the properties of the erroneous 'PCI System Management BUS' ? {I pressume the message on the 'multimedia controler' is something like no driver or such ?}
Can you confirm whether this machine has been to Windows update site or not please ? (this is a different lot of updates to intel, this is s/w updates to 98 @ M$)

My PC is at home.
I will need to check in the BIOS for acpi entries.
I will also check for IRQ sharing.
The message for the sound/multimedua, if I remember, is code 28 drivers for this device are not installed. I will double check and look at the PCI error.
I have not actually gone to the site windowsupdate.microsoft.com. I did go to the windows 98 microsoft site and load 3 updates -- win 98 System Update, win 98 year 2000 update, and win 98 year 2000 update 2

I did go to the update site. There were 20 or so updates that mostly deling with security upgrades. Nothing related to pci or sound, so I did not upload any.
Did not see acpi in the BIOS setup. But it does show up in the report from Msinfo32.
The error on the properties for PCI Mgt Bus is

Device manager does not have an option to view computer by resources.
Only by type and by connection. However, I ran Msinfo32 and obtained the following:

So I'd still do all the updates btw
Are you sure you've given us the right Msinfo32 report ? This is an intel board which takes intel chips .. yet there's a VIA ide controller & a VIA usb controller on it - something doesn't tally ...
