    Sound Card issue

Hello folks. I recently purchased a new computer. Its a emachine Pentium 4 3 gig, 512 ddr ram, onboard sound and video (64meg ram). When I tried some game demos like Star Trek Elite Force 2 the sound would go in and out. Same with Far Cry demo. I figured it was just the crappy onboard video. I bought a geforce fx 5700 256 ram today. Same issue. I've now tried 3 different game and the sound is there for about 10 sec then drops out. once in awhile it will come back. I've installed the latest drivers for the both the video card and the AC'97 onboard sound, no change. Interestingly I can play music cd's all day with no sound issues. I did both the display and sound test on the directx diagnostic program and both passed all tests. Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? The video card is on IRQ 16 and the Sound is on 17. I'm totally lost. Could there be any other software interferring? Also I already did a reformat and reinstall of winxp.
