    Question Win98SE Shutdown Patch

I've got a couple of Acer Power 6000 Celerons running Win98SE. After aplying the shutdown patch, they seem to shutdown OK for a couple of days. After that, I have to reapply the patch. Anybody run into this problem before? Any solutions and/or workaround?

    Thanks in advance!

    Question

Is it booting up clean? There could be a registry error that Windoze could be automatically fixing and this would wipe the patch out. I have had it done to me many times installing patched in win98se. If that is not it then I am out of ideas.

Are you being plagued by the same problem? Does it appear to "stick" on some machines and not others?

    Fixed it!

FYI for anyone else faced with the same thing!!!!!

In my case, at least, my antivirus was set to scan floppies on shutdown. Disabled this function and PROBLEM RESOLVED!

Before you try fixing the probelm.. be sure to pin it down first. Try this.

Boot up the system in question.. and load and unload some apps. Then before you try to shut it down... Kill ALL the running apps but Explorer and Systray. That means hitting CTRL-ALT_DEL and looking at the app list... and Ending everything but Explorer and Systray (Yes i am repeating myself but I am trying to make a point). Once you are sure that the only 2 tasks running are Explorer and Systray... then try and shut down the system. If it shuts down okay after this... then you have some buggy / poorly installed / conflicting software apps causing shut down to fail. If this does NOT fix it... you may have other problems. Bad / Outdated Soundcard drives or Network card drives are the 2 biggest reasons I find in my users systems for a consistent shutdown failure.

    Good Luck

just change this stringkey under your registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Shutdown and the Stringkey FastReboot change it to "0"(zero)
