Workgroup is not accessible
I am working on a laptop with Win XP home sp2. Just upgraded to SP2. Now cannot surf the network. I can however, surf the internet available on the same network. Usually with laptops Windows XP tries to creat a network bridge with the infrared feature. This is the case with this one, but it is disabled and connot be enabled or removed. It was there when I upgraded the OS. Is this bridge effecting this situation and how can I fix it?

Could the Work Group name changed when you did the SP2 update. If I remember correctly when I did a Windows 2000 update one time the Work Group name was changed and I could connect to the net but not other computers on the network.

Thanks for the reply, but the workgroup is right. This is a customer's machine, so when I connect to to my network, I change the workgroup to match mine.
I now have a desktop that the network stopped after SP2 upgrade. This one seems like a firewall issue as I cannot surf internet anymore either.
I like a lot of the new features of SP2, but their stronger emphasis on security may be making networking a little tougher

Turn off the firewall, see if that helps

Control Pannal ... Microsoft Firewall ... check the box to turn it off.

Thanks, that was already done. The problem, is that when I go to "view workgroup computers" even this computer does not show up. If it can't "see" itself then some network setting is wrong! Right? The message that I get is that "Electronics (workgroup) is not accessible".
I used to see this a lot with Win 98. You would just remove everything from network properties and reinstall.
Still waiting for a solution.

click ok / yes to all screens

No need to do that.
Make sure that your NIC's settings are all correct, and that you only have the following installed:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
If there are more protocols, clients, or services, uninstall them.
Unchecking won't work.
Make sure that if you have a DHCP server running, that your NIC is
set to receive its information from that server. Make sure, once again,
that the Firewall is either Off, or On and allowing exceptions.
If that doesn't work, and it's an add-on NIC, either try putting your current
NIC in a different slot; if it's built on, try updating its drivers or uninstall/reinstalling it.
Windows XP's networking usually doesn't go all wonky like that, so I think
it's pretty safe to say the settings are whacked or your NIC isn't working right. Then again, anything is possible and Windows could have a problem. /shrug
The other thing you can do is make sure that it's set up to run on the type
of network you're using. Thus, as an alternative, you can try running the
Network Setup Wizard, choosing which options are closest to your network
configuration.

Thanks for replying Merlinsghost.
Just to recap, rechecked NIC settings. They were fine. I didn't see anything that had changed from when this same PC was connected and working on the network. As far as client, protocols, and adapters, I had things just as you listed except for QoS packet scheduling. which was enabled as is the PC that I'm writing this on. I've seen some write that QoS should be turned off.
But it is too late for any of that because I formatted C:\!!!
