    Post Locking up scrolling IE5

I have win98SE and somtimes when scrolling in IE5 the machine locks up.

I've changed the mouse driver and played with video card hardware acceleration but no joy.

It's costing me a small fortune reconnecting all the time

You wouldn't happen to have an ATI video card, would you? If you do, there's a way to fix that. If you don't, post your system configuration so we can know more about the problem.

    OK system specs are :-

    Gigabyte GA5AA
    128 MB RAM
    AMD K62 500
    Intel i740
    Voodoo 2
    Adaptec SCSI card
    Pace TV card
    Soundblaster 64
    Logitech Pilot mouse
    Plustek scanner
    Epson stylus 660
    HP 4020 CD writer
    Acer 40x cd rom

Thinking about this some more, I'm almost sure this didn't happen until I bought a Saitek cyborg 3d joystick, but I can't see how this couls affect it !
    Thanks in advance

Try disabling smooth scrolling. Tools|Internet Options|Advanced and uncheck Use Smooth Scrolling.

    Paul,
However did you get that i740 to run with an AMD and an ALI chipset. That is a feat within itself. Does the machine lock up any other time or just scrolling? What kind of pages are you looking at? Are there a lot of Java applets running on them?

Give this a shot. Microsoft describes this exact problem with ATI Rage II cards. I know you don't have an ATI card, but what the hell, it's worth a try.

Open up system.ini. (Of course, back it up first!)

Add a line that says DevBMP=0 to the [Display] section of the System.ini file. If there is no [Display] section, create one.

    Restart your computer.

If it works, congratulations; if not, restore the backup and keep looking for a solution.
