smart for hdd

is there a way to reset smart for hard drive?i have a maxtor that works no problems and which has passed all the software test with no defect inclding the the test from maxtor;no bad sector or anything but if i enable smart for hdd it gives me a warning with press f1 to proceedso what i wanrt is reset the smart and forget about the whole thing,the drive is pretty new so i would like to keep it with all it`s data

The 'smart' data lives in a little table beyond the scope of normal reading effectively in the drives firmware, the only way I know of resetting it is to reset it to factory settings - won't keep any data if you do that !

Smart just ain't so smart is all - the top & bottom is it maintains a little table showing disk errors since last boot, too many cumulatively & you get errors & it just keeps on reporting that.. -so its determined your disk is gonna fail, if its new I'd be thinking about RMA not trying to reset any counters !

.. I'll confuse you even more now

- if you just ignore the errors for long enough & no more are actually happening, then the 'smart' warnings will go away ! - because of the way smart works if you get sufficiently long periods of 'no error', then that no longer indicates 'impending failure' as thats all smart can do .. like I said, it ain't so smart

btw .. Stuff like 'bad' IDE drivers can influence Smart, bad cables, other devices on the same channel interfering - it only records failed writes ..

don`t know if it is any indication but i loaded sp2 today and while making the back up it told me it couldn`d read atapi system,the strange thing is that everything works all right on this pc and sp2 went on no problem,i guess this is computer life,
