    ClickHere2Surf,

Thanks for the helpful info! I don't need photo quality (figure I will spend more money/time trying to make my own digital prints than I would sending them to a photo print company!) so I think the 1100 or 1200 would work.

Mostly I print Word/Excel documents, journal articles, etc - and often I have to do a lot, so print speed is a big consideration. I do like having color printing capability. Question: what do you think is the ink cost per page (for word docs) using 1100/1200? Any thoughts on who sells this printer at the best price?

It is also very fast, 20 pages per minute in color, 23 in black, and comes standard with double sided printing.

I also still have an HP photo quality printer all in one (PSC 2410), they also have the same printer in stand-alone, ask if you want me to find the model number.

BUT, as I mentioned this printer will cost $2-4 US of ink per page (8x10 @ 100% coverage), so if you're printing pages with a lot of coverage like I am, DO NOT BUY THIS, unless you are willing to refill the cartridges every 30 pages, which is what I used to do until it became a ridiculous waste of time, so I got a business model that holds 5-6 times more ink.

So, if you want photo quality, and dont mind spending a fortune in ink OR a fortune in time by refilling (doing so brings ink cost to nothing, but it will take a lot of your time), get an HP that uses the 56/57/58 cartridges (only the ones that take the 58 cartridge are true photo-lab quality, the business inkjet claims to be photo quality, but the quality is almost as bad as the deskjet 710, but still VERY good for non-photo documents such as the DVD label of a software I sell).

If you dont need photo quality get the business inkjet 1100/1200, it's fast, comes with double sided printing standard, and prints a TON per set of ink cartridge. The cartridges for the 1100/1200 are also very easy to refill, I do refill them, but I also noticed they seem to be fairly cheap on ebay.

If you have any questions feel free to ask, I've done a LOT of research to decide on the Business inkjet 1100, I also considered color laser printers, until I realized they cost 4-5 times as much, then cost 5 times more in toner, are a LOT slower (4 pages per minute in color vs. 20-24 on an inkjet), and MUCH lower resolution, 600dpi VS 4800, as well as don't support double sided printing until the $3000 models.

I ordered print samples from HP and the color laser quality is absolutely terrible until you get in the $2000+ models, at which point it is still inferior to inkjet, and even the $10 000 ones can't beat a $100 photo quality inkjet for quality.

The printer is already dirt cheap for a business printer, MSRP is $199, it can probably be found for less but I paid the MSRP since it's already very cheap.

    I'll calculate ink cost now...

Ok, this is if you DO NOT refill, if you refill cost gets A LOT cheaper (about 10 times cheaper).

    Black and white documents @ 5% coverage: 1.9 cents/page

Color documents @ 5% coverage: 5.8 cents per print

This is assuming you purchase the cartridges at the MSRP, but I found on eBay they can be found for less than 1/3rd the MSRP.

Also, this printer, unlike HP home printers, has the print heads seperate from the ink cartridges, this means you can refill them and not worry about damaging the print heads, and explains why some are able to sell them dirt cheap (they might not be genuine HPs, but I did get a genuine HP opn ebay for pretty cheap).

But unlike Epson and Canon (which I both hate), HP has user replaceable print heads sold in stores rather than having to return the printer to the manufacturer like Epson, BUT the print heads are rated for 20 000 pages, so you may never even have to replace them.

Also, if you do refill, you must know to never let the cartridge go dry or the print head is dead, I used to have to refill all the time to make sure it never ran dry, or forgot and had to buy new cartridges. This printer has a sensor and can detect when a cartridge is empty and will tell you on your PC screen, so I never have to worry about damaging my print heads by letting them run dry, I am really very very happy with my choice, but not so happy that the 1200 was released the day after my deadline to exchange it at the store, but the only difference is it's 28 pages pr minute rather than 23, but I would really have liked the extra speed, especially considering the new printer is the same price.

Also forgot that this printer also has a seperate cartridge per color, since I refill there is no advantage to me, but if you do not refill this means you dont have to throw away all remaining ink just because one color ran out, just replace the cartridge for the color that is empty.

Here is a video of it printing so you can see how fast it is (on draft in color, which is still a very good quality for documents):

Right click and save target as, I think my web host is hosting 1000 websites on a 19.2k modem, Im looking for a new host right now because this is ridiculous.

Hey, thanks! I appreciate the time you took to post that response. I just might make it through grad school because of you!! Your advice will save me time & money - 2 resources in precious short supply.

Great - good preview. To be quite honest, I have never before watched a video of a printer at work!!
