Welcome to windrivers mlb51981. More info please:
- Exact model # for your vaio
- 98 or 98se?
In either case, your vaio should have come w/ a set of cd's. One of these should contain all the drivers. Depending on the specific model of your sound card, there is either an installation program to be run (most likely) or you can point the hardware wizard to the directory on the cd containing your sound card driver.

It appears you have aureal vortex sound. Nothing on Sony's web site, but try this:

yeah...i have done that a few times. i had previously downloaded a driver that was the wrong one, some one had suggested it from my work. it is a Creative brand driver. it is still saying this is being used as the driver for the device. how to i change it so the device uses the Aureal Vortex driver?

If the creative driver is listed in the add/remove programs list, you can uninstall it from there. Otherwise, go into device manager and uninstall the affected devices. When windows redetects, point it to the directory where the aureal files were installed.

I don't know i must be doing something worng b/c it has voice modem serial wave device listed now as the sound driver and my system info detects no devices with any problems. i still have no sound and when i click volume control nothing happens. the only place i can access the Aureal download is from my desktop and it runs a setup, closes and nothing changes. thank you for your time, i dont want to take up any more of it. this is probably a simple thing to fix and i am making it more complicated then it has to be.
